Would a Shutdown Affect Social Security Payments?

Will you continue to get your Social Security payments if the government shuts down?

With the threat of a government shutdown looming at the end of the month, you may be wondering if you will receive your Social Security checks if the government does end up shutting down.

Social Security is one program that would not be affected. It is considered to be a mandatory program and as such, payments wouldn’t be stopped under a shutdown.

The only possible glitch one might encounter is a delay in receiving payments because administrative costs of the Social Security program are not considered mandatory. However, if past shutdowns are any indication, this is an unlikely possibility as well since checks went out on schedule in the last two government shutdowns.
