Retirement Claims Backlog Grows Again in February

The Office of Personnel Management saw its outstanding backlog of retirement claims grow for the second straight month in February.

The inventory of outstanding applications went from 22,636 to 24,014 at the end of February, a 6% increase over January.

The total number of new claims received was 9,219, almost half the amount that arrived in January. OPM was able to process 7,841 claims, 179 more than it did in January, however the surge that it received in January helped push the backlog higher last month.

OPM estimated that its inventory at the end of February would be 21,542, so it is running slightly behind with the backlog now standing at 24,014. It also projected that 9,800 claims would be processed in February. The winter weather that caused some delays and closures in DC is likely a contributing factor to slowing the process down somewhat.
