President Garfield's Home Opens Several Historic Chapters
As James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, strolled toward the train platform, he was shot in the back by an embittered attorney, Charles J. Guiteau. Garfield died less than two months later of blood poisoning and complications from the shooting. On the day Garfield died, Guiteau wrote to now President Chester A. Arthur, "My inspiration is a godsend to you and I presume that you appreciate it."

Good Politics? President Declares 2% Federal Employee Pay Raise for 2010
President Obama has quietly sent out a letter to the House and Senate noting that for the federal workforce "an across-the board increase of 2.0 percent shall go into effect on the first day of the first applicable pay period beginning on or after January 1, 2010."

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (an organization within the Department of Commerce), the average federal employee now makes $79,197, not including benefits. And, when benefits are added in, the average federal employee compensation averaged $119,982 based on 2008 figures.
