Failing to Pay Government Charge Card Bill Leads to Removal

In the past, it was always viewed that card use was a commitment between the Bank and the employee, not the government and employee. Maybe this case will now be used to crack down on employees who misuse their government charge card.

When will they learn?

Government employees need to understand that when they are told they are responcible for paying their cards the consequences can be drastic. A travel card, once cancelled, cannot be reinstated, meaning if your position depends on your ability to travel, you may not be able to perfom your duties, with similar results to this one. A lot of our employees are on emergency teams, loss of a card also removes them from that.

I'm not surprised that an employee would be removed after taking 9 months to pay his GICC bill. I'm rather surprised that it took 9 months to take any action. However, having been through the government relocation process, I can tell you that reimbursement is much, much slower than it is with other types of travel, even if the employee submits vouchers in a timely manner. Like most of my colleagues, I have to accept the responsibility of paying my GICC bill on time regardless of whether I have reimbursed. However, in those rare instances when travel is not reimbursed prior to the due date, through no fault of the traveler, I find it unreasonable that I am expected to use my personal funds to pay for government travel - even for a single day.

Exactly, it would be a different story if the government were paying you interest on your loan to them. I think it would be acceptable then (and only then).

Its sad this guy lost his job over this. But, he had to know that Citibank will break knees over delayed or delinquent debt. For that reason, I won't charge anything on a government card.

This is especially true since Gov't workers are FORCED to apply for a travel card and then FORCED to accept the consequences of other Gov't agencies sluggishness in the form of late payment fees and possible cancellation.

No, you may not pay out of pocket and get reimbursed! Don't want to play that game? Fine; go find another job.

You should never be asked to use personal funds for travel. I would like to know why the policy differs among agencies? If you believe the news reports, certain intelligence agencies use cash with no paper trail. Why do other agencies expect anything different? And if the Government is late in paying a reimbursement, is the employee due interest? I think so!!!

This is rediculous, no one should have to pay his/her own money for a bill that the government is responsible for. This is a total injustice for the employee to be fired.

You are absolutely CORRECT!!! Bring the employee back to work and get rid to the incompetent voucher examiner!! I don't understand why the employee was fired condering all the waste and budget overruns in the Government's budget every fiscal year. Is anyone listening out there?

I find it very funny that a Government Supervisor who is supposed to be a role model for others to follow would have this type of money management trouble. One can almost conclude that he was not a very good supervisor and I would bet that he won't be missed by those who knew him better. He knew all along what he was getting into when he accepted both the position and the Credit Card and in my opinion he has no one to blame but himself. To procrastinate and allow his credit card statement to go unpaid for so long a period is just plain stupid to say the least. In my opinion, he got what he deserves. If his irresponsible money management ways follow him in his upcoming civilian life, then he needs mental help. The American Public demands and deserve the best financially responsible, trustworthy, hard working ethical individuals as their civil servants and this joker was obviously not qualified. My faith that justice prevaild in this story is affirmed. To this person I say, C-Ya!
