Addressing Medical Issues – Why is this Considered the Most Difficult Area Facing Managers?

This can be one of the most treacherous areas for any supervisor. Every step must be taken with much caution and you definitely have to have your ducks in a row before you make what may be a very unpopular decision. There is, of course, abuse of "sick" leave. Many employees prefer to save annual leave and earn and burn their sick leave whether is legitimate are not. As a supervisor I prefer to let a sleeping dog lie while my ducks line up.

I am so sick and tired of the government focusing in on employees who are abusing their leave. As I am commenting on this I should be at home in my bed. My head is spining and I am hot and my blood sugar is 167 and I haven't even eat anything yet. For the past two days I have been sick. I just saw my doctor on Friday. I am a baby boomer who has three years till retirement.
Yes as we grow old some of us do fall apart physically, mentally and yea spiritually. I am also sisck and tired of these managers trying to diagnose illness of employees. Some managers assume that because we may have the same illiness they make comparisons. What effect me one way, may effect you differently. Everybody immune system is different.

So we need to be focusing on more important things.

Not sure why people see this as so hard. The thing to keep in mind is at the end of the day managers should make sure people are informed on what policy is and be candid if they think the employee is violating it.

I'm not sure that laying in wait and "building cases" or lining up ducks is the way to go and personal feelings are not a consideration --Managers and Supervisors are there to carry out AF policy not their own whims.
And yes it can be frustrating but if you keep your objectivity and sincerity it helps, no sense beating your head against the wall and making it personal.

and if a good employee gets the super bowl flu-get over it
look at the big picture of performance don't love enforcing the rules so much you shoot yourself in the foot

I have never worked in a setting, public or private in which an employee can have hundreds of sick hours yet was not reprimaded for using it when they are sick. I have never called in sick when I havent been sick. I am sick and tired of colleagues coming to work sick! I have worked in hospitals x 25 yrs.Staff spreading their germs to staff + patients. I was sent home by our health office after being diagnosed with bronchitis, MD that evening diagnosed pnuemonia (viral =contagious)and out sick 5 days. Our lead clerk was coming in coughing and always seems to be sick.I was denied advance sick leave after I requested 2 days (I was fairly new) reason :"You have not accumulated enough sick leave". Now why woud I request it if I had it? 2yrs later, accumulated almost 100 hours , acquired more contagious ailments from the same colleague on a few occasions given a verbal warning. I think those who come to work sick should be given the warnings! They tell me they save SL to go on vacation!

I was diagnosed with cancer and needed multiple rounds of intensive chemo several years ago. The bully of a boss I had harrassed and bullied me because she didn't like me. I was walking around bald, with a wig, weak, etc. Yes, I was out alot of blood work, shots, fatigue, and chemotherapy. I was trying to save my life.
I had nearly 8 months of sick leave from a sterling record of 16 years with the Feds.
After my doctors received my notes for detailed info, they thought my boss was crazy.

The Federal Government needs to find a new way to deal with illnesses like this. This invasion of privacy and pressure on an ill patient, who hasn't been a problem before by the way, just makes for more stress and impairs ones ability to heal.

I ended up leaving my agency to get away from this bully and the bullying of my agency.

I gave 100% to these clowns.

If this is the way the Federal Government treats sick people, then I don't care to work there again. Dangerous Place.
