Congressional Term Limits

In my state, we have term limits on the state congress, and what this effectively does is destroy any knowledge base within the legislative branch. You get rid of the bad politicians, but you also get rid of public servants who are working for the public good. Although I remember signing a petition in favor of term limits, I have come to the conclusion that this is not the answer. Instead of term limits, possibly we should consider a "representative" voting system, that is, where elections are not winner take all, but the proportion of elected officials from a single party reflect the number of votes that party received during the election cycle.

I do like the idea of a "proportioned' representation from congressional races. I'd also like to see Presidential races return to way they were at the beginning of our nation - no running mates; the winning candidate gets the Presidency, with the 1st runner-up as Vice President.

Those of us in the considered middle, most of us, don't get heard because we are not contraversial enough. The rabid pro or anti-abortionists get heard, not those seeking a sane, compassionate process that listens to both sides. The extremes bring out the votes.
Those who seek consensus need to be empowered and heard.

As a conservative, (not a Republican) I cannot express the shock, dismay, disappointment, and anger I felt when the Republicans went on a six-year spending spree - and with President Bush's consent. Tom Delay was totally unrepentant about the pork barrel spending, and blames other factors for Republicans' defeat at the polls last November.
I thought Republicans realized how hard we Americans work for our money and how wasteful and uncaring government was and is in spending it. How wrong, wrong, wrong I was.

Pay for perfoemance with specific and approved agenda items would be a start. To the proponent of no term limits who favors the current crop of Democrats, we need a realistic view that either side fails to perform. If I acted like them I would be fired and I wish we had the same opportunity.

As a spouse of a former politician I appreciate the comments made. For all who think politicians are in it only for themselves: "Are you involved in politics so that a change can be made?" Everyone wants to complain but no one wants to get involved. The media has destroyed the public's confidence; they never tell the "whole story" nor the hours spent and the good that is done. In addition, who wants to be subjected to scrutiny by the media. We're not perfect. As a government employee, I know difficult it is to do my job with all the rules. There are too many laws; however, the public can't seem to function on common sense anymore. If it's not a law, then it's ok. If everyone would get involved & become part of the solution, then the problems would be solved! Start at the local level - you'll learn how the political machine works and what a difference 1 person can make. If everyone worked as hard at helping as they do complaining, things will only get better!

I did not resond to the survey. I waited to see the opinion of my fellow workers. Term limits? As short as can be devised. Fire the whole mess of them and start from scratch? Absolutly!! But let's not stop there. Lower the number of presidential appointees and have these congressional appointees report an a regular basis to the people. Take the control of ALL monies out of the hands of the White House and place "local spending, ie.pork" under control of the people.
Given the extent of the information age technology in the hands of the people these days, a national referndum concerning major issues or expenditures could be organized in a week and votes counted in real time.

In reference to the comment "I don't recall that it was an issue when the Republicans were in charge." Actually, it was an issue. This article even refers to a survey that was done in 2003 when Republicans were still the majority. Even then, the majority of people favored term limits. I say if term limits are good enough for the President, it's good enough for everyone else.

I believe the House and the Senate should have term limits inorder to prevent having professional politicians. As things are right now we have politicians that are serving everyone who gives them money instead of their constituents. Congress men and women should be motivated by Public service and not greed.
