Why not ask the vets in the LA area. I'd venture to say most would rather lease out the unused space and use the funds to benefit other vets.

As a retired veteran who is disabled I find it amazing that Senator Diane Feinstein has ignored potential gains of needy veterans for the care and feeding of rich contributors. Senator Feinstein entered an earmark into the military construction and veterans affairs bill to prevent the Veterans Administration from disposing of excess land that could have brought $4 Billion needed monies to the agency. This action was done so that wealthy contributors, many Hollywood types who portray soldiers but have never been one, can keep the splendid views afforded by the empty, yet well maintained acres in West Los Angeles in front of their mansions.
Not only Senator Feinstein is culpable in this heresy, but her champion in stealing from the needy and giving to the rich, Senator Boxer followed up by threatening a South Carolina Senator with "If you mess with earmarks in California then we will obstruct those in your backyard." This is criminal behavior, it must stop.

The vast majority of the Congressional Marks in the Appropriations Bills are written by the Executive Branches Legislative Liaisons. The dilemma of the earmark issue is that there are 2 types of earmarks, those line itemed in the law and those not in the law but in reports. Reports are not signed into law and many legal scholars believe that earmarks that are not written into the Appropriations law (conference reports/tables) do not have the force of law. They are a Congressional wish list and/or a methodology to show the connection between the President’s Budget and the Appropriated amount. However, the Executive Branch believes that if they do not comply with all earmarks, Congress could take actions to deny the Executive Branch their piece of the pork. It is far easier to keep the status quo then for the Executive Branch to challenge the Law.

Typical politics of the rich and famous. I worked in an area where a major expansion and renovation of a fish pier/processing facility that would have brought jobs and money into the area was blocked because a single landowner who had property on the harbor didn't like the added activity anticipated and was a close friend of some influential politicians. He got the federal funding stopped which meant that the project couldn't be completed as the State and local monies couldn't do it alone. So an entire community lost out so that one family wouldn't have to put up with additional fishing boat activity while they vacationed.

I wonder what would happen to all those high priced actors and so called tax payers, if the word got out that they prefer to have unused assets go to waste, than to use it for the benefit of those that serve and have served. I wonder how their so called patriotic image would suffer.

I often wonder how much better Congress would be if the elections were decided by throwing darts at a phone book instead of our current method of selecting Senators and Representatives.

The worst part of all of this is that those two harpies, Feinstein and Boxer, don't give a flying damn about our military or our veterans, and neither do the Hollywood liberals they represent. Their misplaced concern over the use of the VA's land is just an excuse to preserve the lifestyles of the rich and famous.
