Opening the Federal Employee Health Plan to All Americans

The people Hillary proposes to add are the uninsurable with serious medical problems (who will raise the average cost per insured person) and poor people who have not been able to afford insurance who will get the coverage for almost no cost. This latter group will overuse the services because it doesn't cost them much. As the avg medical cost per person rises, our FEHB premiums will skyrocket. That will particularly affect retired Govt employees who pay the same premiums on a lower income.

To make matters worse, 70% of our FEHB premium is paid by our employer (on money we'd otherwise get as additional income). There isn't anyone to pay the employer's share of all these uninsured, often unemployed people.

We'll pay additional income tax to cover the cost of all those people Hillary adds to the program who can't afford to pay $12-15K per year for a family plan.

Freebies are never free; they just are paid for by suckers like us.

Couldn't agree more. This is a benefit of employment, part of our compensation if we choose to use it. Taxpayers, including ourselves will foot the bill for this, and it will destroy a good program for us. She will do or say anything to get elected. Hold on to your wallets.

Ideas like this is only one of the reasons why it would be a disaster for our country if Clinton the 2nd were to be elected president.

If they wanted to use our system as a model for a similar, but completely separate system, that might be a viable option.

There is no way that I would support anyone who wanted to open our system up to the rest of America.
FEHB is an employee benefit and should remain so and never allowed to be turned into a welfare program.

Like other posters, I view FEHB as an employee benefit, something special for US, and think it should stay that way. However, I also believe in universal coverage. Setting up a parallel public system is a good idea, but premiums need to be controlled. If they are not, it will make people into sitting ducks. The most cost-effective option is single-payer - not single-provider! - but this idea has not come into its own in this country yet. On the positive side, if FEHB is opened to all, it would mean that those who stay with the feds because they are afraid of losing health insurance would have more choices.

That's impossible. The government already pays 2/3's of your premium now. Who is going to pay all 3 thirds for these other people in the plan? Taxpayers, and I assume you are one of those. So, they could eliminate your 1/3 of the premium and you and the rest of us will all be paying for it anyway. Don't be fooled by the smoke and mirrors.

Where do the federal unions stand on this?

Usually when Fedsmith posts an article about a threat to federal benefits, at least one or two union reps take the opportunity to post strident comments in response, yet I see no such comments so far on this article. Come on, loudmouths, we know you're reading this, so tell us where you and your unions stand on it. Could your silence have anything to do with the fact that this attack on one of our most-valuable benefits (and it is an attack, whether it was intended that way or not) comes not from the evil Bush administration, but from the frontrunning presidential candidate of your beloved Democratic Party? If you really want to do something for your membership, instead of worrying about your own political clout, you'll tell Hillary loudly and publicly to drop this idea and never bring it up again.

I would not want the FEHB to be offered to all Americans. I think the Federal Government by far has a very good health care program. This program and its many options should be used as a recruitment tool to entice "the best and the brightest" to join the Federal Government. Many companies in private industry do not allow their employees to take health and life insurance into retirement.

I have no problem allowing everyone access to health care, but if the Federal Government is going to subsidize everyone at the same rate as Federal Employees, there will be a tremendous cost. The budget could not handle it. There are too many programs that are under funded now to be creating another giant one. It also sounds too much like socialized medicine.
