Excellent article, especially the easy to understand estimation guide at the end.

As far as Congress making changes in WEP that benefit civil servants; I wouldn't hold my breath. If anything, the tide will run in the other direction.

It would a lot less confusing if you could show some examples of how this works, using a CSRS pension and a potential SSA benefit. After reading this article, I remain confused.

This is a total ripoff for CSRS people, they should have grandfather us into this. I have worked a part time job since 1962, but have not met 20yrs of earnings statment so I will lose half of my S/S.

What a screw job......by working OUTSIDE the government for 10 years was a BIG mistake. So was going to college. Should have joined the gov't right out of high school and had them pay for my education and get out at 55 with about 80 percent of my salary. The way to dumb down government.....oh...what a suprise..it's happening. And they are using my social security wages to give to illegal aliens.

The fact that my (largely CSRS) pension is already reduced due to early retirement does not seem to diminish the hit imposed by WEP. Shouldn't it?

I tried the Social Security website WEP calculator, and it requires you to input your entire employment history! Not worth the effort! Your quick computation is a vast improvement! Your "figure 1/2 reduction or subtact $340" may not get a "to the penny"answer, but the SS website WEP calculator has the disclaimer that it is
"approximate" too.
