It is my understanding that if one works for 30 years under FERS after being in CSRS, the WEP/GPO is completed eliminated and one receives the entire social security benefit. I based this on my own experience. When I started working under FERS, my SS was $340/month. I am now up to $970/month and growing. I am aiming for 100%. If I am wrong in this assessment, will somone in their generosity advise me correctly.

I've always thought that the GPO is unfair.
If both spouses worked and paid into social security, would benefits be decreased/eliminated if one of them died? If not, the GPO is extremely unfair to government employees. My husband paid the maximum into social security, so why shouldn't I receive his benefits in addition to what I EARNED working for the government. What about individuals who work in private industry? Does a similar rule exist for them? Maybe if I understood better, it wouldn't seem so unfair.
Even if all benefits are calculated the same way, it's still an unfair system. Once again, people who work all their lives paying into the system, have their money redistributed to others who may not deserve it. Just to clarify, I'm not referring to the disabled or elderly. I'm talking about individuals who abuse the system.

Yes, the survivor would get only one benefit - the higher of the deceased spouse or their own. My husband would switch to my benefit amount if I died. I would NOT get ANY of his benefit if he died because my benefit is higher than his. The concept of GPO reduction is fair. I don't know if the amount is fair. Why should someone who did not contribute to SS get more than some who did. In short - I and my husband both paid into SS all our careers and I can collect NONE of his as a retired widow without qualifing children.
From www.ssa.gov bulletin:
http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10084.pdf
"If you are getting benefits based on your own work,
call or visit us, and we will check to see if you can get
more money as a widow or widower. You will receive
the higher benefit, not a combination of the two types
of benefits."
I still do not understand?

I retired in 1993. 18 years with Gov and 15 years miltary so retired with 33 years for pay and 33 years for miltary retirement because we had to be in the national guard to have the Gov job.
I do get some SS but not a lot $416.50 before medicare is taken out.
Thanks

My spouse retired in 1996 after 10 years of CSRS offset employment. WEP prevented him from collecting the full Social Security benefit he had earned from private sector employhment. When my husband dies (he is 20 yrs older than me) I guess I will receive a survivor benefit from his CSRS pension. But because I will receive full CSRS retirement of my own I will be subject to GPO and that will wipe out the survivor benefit that would have come to me from his Social Security payment. Is this true?

OK so I will retire under CSRS and will select survivor benefits for my wife. I also qualify for Social Security as I have met the quota in quarters paid into the system. I realize because of WEP my social security will be cut, however my wife will be drawing security as she doesn't work with the federal government. Should she die first does that mean that I will lose her social security because of the fact I am recieving a federal retirement pension? If this is true that is so unfair; and like wise should I die first will her social security be cut because she will recieve survivor benefits from my pension? So unfair. If someone has the answer please post reply. Thanks

Since I have been total government employee (CSRS) and my husband is total SS - this means if something happens to him I will not be able to draw spouse's SS benefits? What happens to all of the $$$$$ he has contributed to SS - does it just disappear??????
