Who cares why!
Most of us won't be swayed by a day off to change any political opinions for or against any particular person or thing. It simply makes a certain amount of sense and saves a lot of aggravations.
I appreciate the day off. I will come back after my xmas leave and work hard as I always do. (Hopefully working smart will continue to make the work less hard.) I will bake my gingerbread cakes and think nice thoughts for one day about someone who gave me a nice little xmas present.
I don't care if there were economical or political reasons behind it.
A few thoughts...

after reading the few comments here...
We should all be grateful for the extra day off. To make comments that it is because it's an election year, to get us to accept a lower pay increase, or any other negative comment is just wrong.
I personally am grateful for the extra day off, would be grateful for even a 1% pay increase (when others on the outside are getting nothing), and I know that Bush is not the first President to give the day before Christmas when it falls on a Tuesday off.
Rather than always focus on the negative, why not try being positive -- negativity from Federal workers does not create a positive image -- it creates an image that we are all a bunch of whiners.
The holiday season is a time of joy so don't spoil it for those of us who are grateful for what we have.

Come on, you could state the truth about why we're being given this holiday. We got every December 24 off for the last 34 years when Christmas fell on a Tuesday. I was predicting this weeks ago! Just say thanks and accept this as "past practice."

He gave the "shirts" leeway to keep some people working. Think of us while you bake your cakes and do some last-minute shopping. My job is only became "essential" because the "shirt" in my office doesn't want me to have that day off--no other reason.

those of us that can take advantage of the extra day should be very thankful, because if you think about it there are going to be thousands of our fellow employees' including the military who will not be able to take advantage of this. thank you President Bush and Happy Holidays to all.
