Here's my add-on: do your current job very, very well. Make this reputation for yourself: this is a hard working, producing, team playing, deadline meeting, non-complaining, non-gossiping employee. This employee volunteers to take on those "extra" projects which make me, the boss or organization look good. This employee has done the job well and has enhanced his/her experience! These are the employees who get noticed, promoted and get the breaks. Just do it!

You hit the nail on the head. You are never too old to get your degree nor too old to change positions. I am over 60 and am changing agencies. If you are good at your job but unhappy, look elsewhere. There are plenty of federal opportunities and don't be afraid of learning a new field. Even if you are uncertain about leaving your present position, apply anyway. Every interview you have will increase your chances of the job you really want since you are honing your interview skills.

Your resume (application package) is your first impression. Proofread, proofread, proofread...I can't stress this enough.
From my observation paying attention to little details such as grammar, tense, spelling, format, etc., makes a difference in the impression you are making. A sloppy resume may say to me that this person's work habits might be sloppy. Think about this everytime you submit your application - what first impression am I making?

The articles comments are "make your slef feel better" comments, becasue in realtiy it "is not what you know, it is who you know". A TSA office just hired a CARGO Inpsector Supervisor, who has No experience in CARGO, who has NO experience as a Supervisor, but he was working at TSA HQ and HQ policy is if you work at HQ we will find you a job in the field, despite your qualifications.
So all of those who want to take your advise to move up in your Fed Carreer, please go ahead, but don't be surprised when they bring someone in over you who has No qulifications except they know someone.
