another reason not to hire spouses is that since the military is always moving, the spouse will not stay long and employers have to rehire someone, not conducive to long-term job needs planning or effectiveness

Should a spouse get preference? Only if he/she's qualified for the job, and capable of performing it.

Finaly Federal employees (no-veterans) are shouwing their true colors. Keep Veterans and all military spouses away from our system. I watched fedearal employees move up the chain just because they own the majority of the process and the system. Even now it is a matter of LAW to give veterans preference VA specificaly is the last to stand by vets when it comes to higher level jobs. I've seen BS and MS degreed vets get a job as a cleaner in the VA just because higher jobs are reserved for "Internal Candidates only" Thats the favorite statement by the system that wants to promote from within only. It will take few more IG inspections and few HR directors to be fired before existing laws are followed. Absolutely spouses shoudl get a preference before any federal employe should.

To promote the efficiency of the service, I beleive the best person for the job should get the job. The federal government is not here as a welfare program or individual development program for individuals. It is here to act in the best interest of our nation as a whole.
While I beleive there is value in Veteran's preference, I don't beleive it is appropriate to extend Veteran's preference in hiring to spouses. Although a military spouse make sacrifices in support of his/her military partner, it is not appropriate to equate a spouses experience to a Veterans.
However, while hiring preference is not appropriate, other spouse/ family benefits should be afforded for the sacrifces that the spouse makes to support his/her military spouse.

Enlisted, non-officer spouses ONLY; Enlisted, active duty spouse MUST be or have been in combat-zone billet and ACTUALLY have been deployed at least ONCE; MUST be eligible for position they're applying for; must apply for position just like everyone else who is applying; once active duty spouse retires or separates, ONLY ONE of the couple should be allowed VA preference; non-appropriated fund jobs preferred.
Better yet, why not politic and brow-beat local industry to give preferential treatment to "spouses"? I can assure you that they would NOT buy into this non-sense.
And I, for one, would never hire 90% of the retired hi-grade officers I see job hunting. I am close to "local industry" and most of the ex-officers I see getting into civil service & support contractors are "in-bred into the system" and the "we've-always-done-it-this-way" crowd. We need fresh, new, young, motivated, spirited, folks - with modern degrees and perspectives - to revitalize civil service.

For the respondent who provided this response, "A human resources specialist with the Department of the Army at Ft. Belvoir, VA pointed out that such a program already exists within the Dept. of Defense: "There is already a military spouse employment preference program in place within DoD. The Regulation is DoD 1400.25-M, Subchapter 315."" has no clue on interpreting that reg. Although, there is a regulation out there, it does not apply to all spouses. It's wrong and things need to change. Our spouse, male or female, make sacrafices when accompanying their soldier to another duty station. Most often, these spouses have to start all over again trying to find a job. As long as their spouse is active duty, many find that their career never begins with the constant movement. So, for those readers who think it's not a good idea to created more opportunities to spouses, think again. You should be thankful that you have a job; if it weren't for the military, you wouldn't have a job!!

I agree that all individuals need to be held to the standard and fired when not meeting those standards. I think federal employees are in shock when a X-military gets hired because they have the skills to lead and eliminate non-performers. There are to many federal managers who did not have military experience who allow federal employee to stay on, perpetuating the notion that "noone gets fired from the federal government. I removed 3 such individuals in the past 5 years and I'm getting ready to remove one more. One was a veteran but others siply thought that people just don't get fired. It's a job for life. BRING IN MORE VETS AND THEIR FAMILIES.
