"Zero Tolerance" for Workplace Violence--and Enforcing It

Thanks for publishing this article. It's nice to see there are some agencies that are willing to make a tough call and then have General Council that will back up that call through the appeals process. My experience has been that agencies either won't make the tough call in the first place (90% of the time) and then when they do, between the agencies General Council and the MSPB Administrative Law Judges all they want to do is make some kind of settlement just to make it go away. The Federal Government tollerates way too much unacceptable behavior from a very few employees which adversely affects the majority of great employees out there.

I believe in Zero Tolerance for Violence at the Workplace.

When I go to work - I DO NOT want any type of violence around me.

I want to fill safe and know that I will not get hurt, because someone else had a disagreement, and are fighting around me and it spills over into my area (Please understand this is a major concern with many of us today).

Take the violence somewhere else.

If people have a disagreement and want to go to the gym and climb into the boxing ring - that is there business, but NOT where I work.

I worked private industry many years ago (before federal gov), and a man brought a shotgun to work and shot up people and it was right next to me.
I have NO Tolerance for Violence in the workplace.

NO Violence in the workplace!
Personnel with violence trents need to be put into counseling and not given access at work to hurt someone or cause personnel to become upset/hurt.

Agency correct-- but not likely at DCD

Security guard lifts and throws another security guard into a bank of lockers, Gets taken out of uniform. Word is that when the dust settles agressor will be back in uniform. Seems the individual who assulted his fellow guard is coated in teflon. Has been out of uniform in the past for over 3 years. Should go just like Mr. Cosen but in all likelyhood will not be terminated. Will Mr. Cosen have a good reason to appeal based on DCD managements actions??

There should be a ZERO tolerance nationwide not just at Pine Bluffs!!

I agree with the judgement. Zero tolerance means zero tolerance anything else is not zero. In my experience agencies pick and choose whom they want to exercise this employee right. I wish more agencies had the intestinal fortitude to carry out those actions on all personnell instead of a select few.

I too agree with the principle of "zero tolerance." I wonder, however, if the agency would have applied the same standards had the other guard (a female) been the instigator? Or would they have merely given her an oral reprimand and an "excellent" performance rating in place of "outstanding" for that year? One can only wonder in these days of double standards.

Sorry folks, but I disagree with all of you.

Zero tolerance policies are almost always an overkill of political correctness and generally a coward's way out of dealing with unpleasant behavior.

Violence in the workplace, or anywhere else, of course should never be tolerated. But punishment should always fit the crime. With zero tolerance polices, that only happens by coincidence, not by design.

There are not enough details in this case for me to say if he should have been fired or not, but he certainly should have been given an opportunity to make his case.

Zero tolerance policies always seem to come from the hypocritically self-righteous. I've never heard anybody who supports a zero tolerance policy apply one to himself. It's always somone else's behavior.

When I went through my divorce my (then) wife tried to provoke me several times into physical confrontations so she could call the police and use this against me in court. This guard may have very well been 'set-up' by this other into such a physical confrontation, but he still should have known better.
