After you have either counseled, documented, followed appropriate disciplinary steps and senior mgt has been notified, the frequent mid-mgt complaint is that Mgt does not support them. Hence, you are stuck at ground zero with no expectation of change from the problem employee; in fact, you the Mgr, are sometimes questioned as though you are the problem when in fact Sr. Mgt knows that the problem employee is a problem but has no will to support their manager (for whatever their reason(s) are. This sends a message to the Mgr - why bother...
