The symbols mean that we went from a Word document created in Windows to a Word document on a Macintosh, into an editing program and then converted the characters into html for posting on the site. When the article was activated, for some reason a couple of characters changed into the strange looking symbol that you saw.

We have gone through and eliminated the strange characters.

After you have either counseled, documented, followed appropriate disciplinary steps and senior mgt has been notified, the frequent mid-mgt complaint is that Mgt does not support them. Hence, you are stuck at ground zero with no expectation of change from the problem employee; in fact, you the Mgr, are sometimes questioned as though you are the problem when in fact Sr. Mgt knows that the problem employee is a problem but has no will to support their manager (for whatever their reason(s) are. This sends a message to the Mgr - why bother...

I too have experienced the frustration you express. I have found, and continue to recommend, that the supervisor continue to do the best job he/she can do. Your other employees are watching how you handle these situtations and their respect for you as a supervisor is based upon your action with the difficult employee. The other employees become frustrated with you when one employee gets away with violations of conduct/perfornance requirements. Keep up the good work. Hopefully, you will eventually get a manager who will reward your good work.

My comments are not directed to BC as rebuttal but he/she does provide a very common issue experienced by many managers; ' in fact, you the Mgr, are sometimes questioned as though you are the problem when in fact Sr. Mgt knows that the problem employee is a problem but has no will to support their manager (for whatever their reason(s) are.' I was told that one of the reasons this occurs is that the manager who is taking this action is wrong and may well be creating a potential behavorial/performance issue by taking this course. An example would be an employee who cuts corners is praised and rated outstanding by one manager who is severely understaffed. The staffing is increased and a new manager comes in and starts documenting this same employee who can only assume its the managers fault. The manager above knows what's going on so cans the negative write ups. You now have a potential union activist on your hands. Not fair to anyone is it?
