How does the military deposit into FERS effect retirement, and what is the process? Will this effect my MRA? What is the cost?

(FERS) I had to redeposit after finding out from a pre-retirement class, I was in my 22nd year of working, it needs to be told to employees with the first start working as temps. I had to pay back roughly $800, most of it was interest, in the class they said I had a few option, let them take it out when I retire, payback now, or work and extra year.

I plan to retire this year and I recently found out that I have an unpaid pre-1982 CSRS deposit of about $3,500 and that my annuity will be reduced by about $350 per year if I do not pay it. I have read several of your articles, however, I have not seen the answers to my questions: If I choose to pay this - how do I do it? When is the last opportunity to pay it. Thanks.

You must pay it before OPM finalizes you annuity. It's actually better to pay it back before your last day.

Is there any way they will change the law for FERS redeposit? It sure would be a blessing if they would. When I cashed mine out, I was not informed of the consequences. Thank you.

I worked 5 years between 89 and 94, quit then came back gov. in 99. I don't remember a payout and can-not find out through EBIS or any web sites whether I need to "pay back" any amount. Can I find this information on-line if I cashed it out when I quit? I'd rather pay it now then in 10 years. Thanks.

I feel that FERS should have the option to redeposit money to their retirement same as CSRS had.
When I left the government no one explained that I should leave my FERS alone. I was just sent a package with a lot of papers and told to sign where there were "X"s and return the package to headquarters. I had 12 years of service in and if I had an HR person to explain everything to me then I would have left my retirement alone. Now I'm starting all over and I won't be able to work long enough to get my 20 years in.
