It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know what is or is not right when it comes to spending tax dollars. Each and every abuser of a government credit card should be terminated, period. This crap about, "I didn't know," "I didn't have training," "Everybody else does it," is pure nonsense, and should not be part of the equation when dealing with these thieves. If you buy something that is questionable, then it's questionable and shouldn't be purchased until enough documentation supports the purchase. If you are ordered to purchase something that is questionable, ensure requests are in writing. If you can't get that, document it yourself with a follow-up e-mail to the requester if it is a supervisor. If the requester is not your supervisor, then don't buy whatever it is if it is questionable. If you are not sure what you can or can't buy, turn in the card as you shouldn't have one. The statistics are sickening, and tax payers deserve better.

I notice that "travel card" was inserted in the last sentence of the articel where no mention of it had been made in the "bullets" that were written earlier in the article. They all pertained to purchase cards.

There is no excuse for federal employee's to abuse the credit card system and the trust placed in them by their employer.

Frankly, we don't need employee's like this who give the give the rest of us a black eye. They should be terminated from employment.

I think the newspapers and this article are all guilty of mixing Apples and Oranges. The author makes only subtle and very few efforts to distinguish between the Governent Purchase Card Program and the Government Travel Card Program. Using the Purchase Card Program when describing how abusers are using "taxpayer" money to purchase things they shouldn't, the author then shifts gears to the abuses that are traditionally applied to the Travel Card Program... where the cards are paid by the Traveler and if he/she are lucky, reimbursed by Uncle Sam. Needless to say, if I purchased something that was not allowed by the JTR, I would have to pay the bill out of MY pocket... not the taxpayer's pocket.

And as an aside... if I didn't pay my bill on time, it was my credit that was at risk, not Uncles... even if it took months for Uncle to reimburse legitimate travel expenses.

Misuse of governments credit cards is a misnomer. Fraud is violating the law. Until persons are prosecuted and made to reemburse the government, this will continue. Wrting a bad check is stealing, so is this.

With the exception of item three, they are just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. I mean, really, we’ve had accounting procedures in place and pretty clear rules about the use of government credit cards for years–the problem remains in the will of agencies, managers and supervisors to enforce those rules. Don’t mean to sound like discipline is the only answer but discipline is what employees who break the rules bring on themselves–not what supervisors do to employees. If we’re going to have rules that protect our use of taxpayer money we need to enforce those rules. When enforced, it’s amazing how fast most employees will fall into line and follow the rules–come on, no employee really believes they get government credit cards for personal use–they just fall into bad habits when no one cares.
