The FEHB is not a panacea for the medically uninsured in our nation. The logic is unsound as it has been for recent State's attempts to open State Teacher's Retirement systems for an additional source of revenue. Politicians complete lack of ingenuity and original solutions is starkly evident when they grab at model systems of small-scale government fiscal management to be an answer to on-going broad-scale programmatic problems such as health care. Hillary bombed on her first attempt at health care reform as First Lady. It is clear that she has not developed any more solutions over the previous 10 years. How about if Bill and Hillary practice personal philanthropy and utilize a portion of their $200-$300 million income to initiate a no-cost/low-cost health care program for low income folks rather than mandating the working-class government employee to open their hard-earned and hard-won medical benefit system to those who have not put forth the effort to contribute.

Although Hillary states that she will open FEHB up to all US, she has said in the past and also on this interview that she wants a plan like FEHB- If it works for gov employees, then a similar system should be put in place for the US to be sure everyone has health insurance.

I think it's incredibly selfish to be so unwilling to share this program with the taxpayers who have no health coverage, but whose taxes underwrite our premiums. There are plenty of hard-working taxpayers out there who either cannot afford health coverage: and others whose employers' plans are woefully inadequate, or who are excluded from full coverage because of pre-existing medical conditions or family histories of certain illnesses.

Why do you insist that others should pay?
Last time I checked, we all "earned" our benefits and pay.
If HilLIARy takes it from us earners, and GIVES IT to those that aren't earners, then we should all stop working and await the federal largess.
(Hill and Bill banked a cool $110M the last 8 years) Easy for her to be generous with others earned benefits!!
Many might think you don't "need" to waste money on the type of housing you have. It's TOO much! Or perhaps the type of hobbies you spend money on. Perhaps THEY need to make decisions for you.

When I signed on 25+ years ago with the Government, the trade-off for pay compensation was other earned benefits such as health insurance under FEHB. It is an earned benefit that is a part of our overall employment compensation. For the family option the average employer (govt) contribution is about $12,000/yr with the employee kicking in on avg about $3,000/yr. I ask who is going to pay the $12K a year for everybody else. Essentially we are going to just give everybody a $12K benefit? Why work for it? Soon you will be able to get it for free!
I am so disappointed that the dialogue in the public square about Federal employees is they get health care for free. That is really unfair.
No doubt we need to do something in this country, and I not sure what the answer is, as many folks do not have earnings to afford such a plan just for the share that Federal employees have to kick in.
If we think health care is exepnsive now just wait til it is free for everybody!

Opening FEHB to everyone may or may not be the ideal situation or what actually happens in the final analysis but at least Senator Clinton has a plan which can start us on the way to insuring all Americans have exist to health coverage. Now all she and her co elected officials need to do is put forward a real effort to get a reasonable and workable solution. It is a shame that so many of our citizens do not have a way to get health coverage.

A lot of people are already on FEHB, and Blue Cross, and Kaiser, ad infinitum. That Mexican pushing the mop across the tiled floor at your local McDonald's? He went to the emergency room last week because he was sick and feverish and no private doctor would take him since he had no health insurance. That lady who cleaned your hotel room when you went TDY? She went to the emergency room last week because she was sick and feverish and no private doctor would take her since she had no health insurance. Both of them gave the admitting clerk false addresses; these patients will never get bills, and if they did they couldn't, and wouldn't, pay. Multiply this by several hundred people per week per ER. No hospital can absorb this, so they charge more--much more--to the people who do have insurance. This is why your premiums and co-pays are skyrocketing. We'll all get off much cheaper if the medical system is reformed.

An urban hospital will be lucky if it breaks even. Don't take my word for it, go do some research. That's what I did. Also, ask people you know who work in the medical field.
I wrote my statement on my lunch period, as I am doing now. Please stand corrected.

I liked your comment about the Japanese system, where insurance companies are required to be non-profit. A major problem with proposals to require that everyone buy health insurance in this country is that there appears to be no proposal for control of rates. Can't you see the eeg-zec-u-teevs drooling over that?!

i believe making fehb available to everyone is the wrong thing to do. first it will diminish the health care of the present federal employee's and in all likelyhood it will increase the cost to present employee's. secondly, it will probably destroy the present system.
why hasn't this subject been brought up before?
this is all a ploy for these canidates to get elected to office.
