I'm sure there are people who make false claims for their own financial benefit. Also, I've seen managers overreact to an innocent social invitation by punishing the person issuing the invitation; and I've witnessed the overzealous efforts of an HR Officer responding to an isolated, albeit inappropriate, incident. These are the officials who facilitate the reaping of an undeserved harvest.
Nonetheless, in handling hundreds of claims of discrimination, I've seen more serious harassment ignored or minimized than minor or innocent acts punished as harassing.
If agencies take immediate and appropriate action in response to claims of harassment, justice will prevail; faulty claims will fail; and threats of false claims will backfire.

I'm always reminded of just how PC the federal crowd is when I see a situation like this. This article had nothing to do with sexual harassment and one small reference to it within the article generated a series of comments that were almost exclusively about sexual harassment and just how "offended" people were by the minuscule reference in the article. If the entire thesis of the article were about the subject I could understand it. I think I saw maybe 2 comments out of all of them that were about the main subject of the article. Get a grip people - if you are offended by sexual harassment or anything else and want to debate it, find a logical outlet for it, such as a forum that is actually on the subject.

Why is it OK to make a statement that assumes that most discrimination claims are dishonest, just because it's not the main point of the Article? If I write a paragraph about the daisies in spring and throw in "only" one sentence that shows that I have bigoted ethnic or racial views, would that be OK?

Where did it say that most discrimination claims are dishonest? It refers to "some" people winning the legal lottery by filing a lawsuit. That doesn't make them dishonest and it certainly doesn't imply that most (or even any claims) are dishonest.

The reality is that any comment that can be construed by anyone with an axe to grind or a grudge is verboten in the federal workplace by our thought police.

Please read the article again--but with an open mind--and without looking for all kinds of bad things that may offend the hypersensitive, politically correct thought police spread throughout our government.

It is "OK" to make a statement such as "that" because of the First Amendment to the Constitution. The Constitution grants free speech, but does not grant the right not to be "offended". The PC crowd in the federal government never miss a chance to be offended; especially if there is a chance the taxpayer will pay. The better chance of payout; the more offended. EEOC complaints are, indeed, a lottery. Keep up the shrill diatribes; they provide amusement for an otherwise dull day.

How can anyone be that gullible?! That's plain stupid!
I don't open any email from someone I don't know. As far as the Nigerian scam, I've received that email any number of times and I delete it each time I get it.

Apparently you have never investigated sexual harassment complaints because if you had you know that there is never a winner - not the complainant or the alleged discriminating official or the workplace. I gained this insight after many years of reviewing EEO complaint files to determine the appropriate resolution. As for what I think was the main topic of your article, it is obvious that retraining on the proper use of government computers is in order for the woman and probably her co workers - you know that if she is doing something as "unwise" as she was that there are probably many other doing something similar. We use to require periodic retraining of our employees just to insure that they were well informed on the proper use of their computers and the latest scams. We also found that highlighting scams experienced by our employees or those of other agencies usually tended to hit home the hardest.

Why in the world would anyone take those scams seriously? I've been using the internet for year... both here and at home. I've seen hundreds of e-mails like those and the first rule of thumb is that if something sounds too good to be true... well!

I don't like that people were conned but, jeez, use your heads already.

I agree with the others that it's completely shameful that you equated sexual harrasment suits with scams.

Do you think being sexually harrassed is pleasant and these individuals are just over-reacting? Wake up, already. These aren't the dark ages anymore.

Out of curiosity, where does it say that sexual harassment is a scam? The article that is on my computer never says that..or even implies it...expect perhaps in your own mind. Did you read the article?

I can't help but wonder where some of these commentators learned to read. The he first couple of paragraphs are talking about changes in social mores...good, bad or indifferent. Or does any mention of the phrase "sexual harassment" have to be describing the process of filing complaints in glowing terms? Has anyone been given big awards as a result of filing a complaint? More accurately, is there any major agency that has not had at least one case involving a large payoff in the last decade?

Let's all get offended--even if there is nothing to be offended about! Perhaps we will all feel better by considering ourselves to be victims.

But please go back and read the article first.
