Well in 2002, I left Qwest after being there for the bubble for 4 years after leaving the Army. I could not find a job making the $$ I was there, so I ended up going back to Grad school, picking weeds, working security in a Quarry double shifts on Sundays. I did this even after I found a decent full time job for a while. I basically applied what the Army told me in ACAP when I got out. The basics of the job search is as easy as ABC. Any job, to a Better job, and then a Career. It sounded nuts when I first heard it, but it works. As for working for the Government, I make less here than in the private sector, and the benies are about the same, but it is available time off, and the 8 to 9 hour days that I like. Which is better than 12 to 15 hours a day.

By the mid-1990s, I had kept the same job, while climbing the career ladder for over 15 years. I knew the job so well that I could do the work even while drinking alcoholically.

I got my RIF notice and searched successfully for another position in the Federal government. Well, learning a new job, while drinking on a daily basis, is very difficult. Basically, that job su**ed so bad, that I had to get sober, which I was only able to accomplish through Alcoholics Anonymous. Once I was sober and after I had moved on to still another agency that hadn't seen my poor performance while I was hitting my alcoholic "bottom" and starting my climb back out, I started to have a successful career in Human Resources.

Then, I was asked to come back to the agency from which I was originally RIFFED, because the folks that survived the RIF finally retired and they needed someone that could manage the program. If I had not been RIFFED, I probably would have drunk my way out of the job by now.

dude, congrats. i got sober on active duty and been that way for 13 years and it's been one miracle after another. best of luck to you one day at a time.

Where to old federal employees apply??

I heard a story about an older federal employee.

He stated that it was a website where older federal employees could go an apply for positions.

This older federal employee stated that the federal government would help older personnel secure a position from this web site.

This older federal gentlement stated that this web site had full time positions, and part time positions and also some communitor type positions.

Do you know the webiste this genltemen was referring to?? I have looked on the DON HR Navy Chart system and do not see what the older gentlemen was referring to.

This article is worthless in giving information to right the wrong of "Age Discrimination". It seems to be accepting of this unfair and pernious system. Any type of discrimination is wrong, particularly age discrimination. If there is downsizing, particularly in Government, those with less years of service, should be the ones to go first because "seniority" is supposed to be the mainstay of the RIF system. Also, that crap about getting retrained at age 55, 65, or 70 has nothing to do with "Age Discrmination".

You are obviously not under NSPS. Time in service is rated on the bottom of the scale when it comes to a RIF. Under the new system, a bad supervisor can give you two low evals and someone with two years of service can bump you out of a job with 25 years. Also, that same supervisor determines how much of a pay raise you get, and if any, he decides how much goes into base pay and how much is called a bonus. You are only garanteed 1.5% into base pay. What do you think that does for your retirement? Look out, it could be you!
