Mileage Rate Increase

Finally, after pleading from NTEU, the IRS has decided to raise the mileage rate. The problem, and it is a problem for federal employees, is that GSA has to raise the reimbursement in order for federal employees to receive the higher rate. Past experience with GSA has not bode well with federal employees. The IRS announced in October 2007 the increase in rate to 50.5 cents/mile. GSA intentionally dragged its feet until March 19, 2008 to increase the reimbursement, effectively costing employees money out of their pockets to travel on official business. GSA had plenty of warning to do the right thing but instead chose to punish federal employees. Considering that the "former director" Lorita Doan resigned under allegations of political influence one can only wonder if this punishment was intentional or diliberately done to save budget money. In any event, it was plain WRONG!!! If this plays out the same way, employees should refuse to use their cars for official business.

Question for IRS.
Can the difference be taken on you income tax return?
Meaning what the Agency pays you vs what the IRS allows.

GSA has not changed or it appears even looked at the High Mileage drivers 28.5 cents per mile (when a GOV vehicle is avaible if asked for)in a number of years. I contacted Congressman Marion Berry's office around January 28, 2008, after repeated attempts to get some answers from GSA. I found that not many GSA folks knew there was a 28.5 cents slot. I got the normal letter from Berrys off which leads me to think he never his-self seen the request for his assistance. My agency sent out a FSIS Notice dated 5/6/08 that effective after March 19, 2008 the milage rate would still be 28.5 cents for High Mileage drivers where a GOV was available. Looks like the GSA is trying to make sure we who needs the freedom to meet provate needs to ahd from work are choked down. I belonged to AFGE for over 25 years. The National Treasury Employees Union and Federal Fire Fighters Union has done more for the federal work force but as of yet have they tackeled this problem. We may be the only agency with the

I always loved that statement 'by law'. Many times I have seen it but have never been able to find the actual reference. It makes you wonder, if this is true or just that GSA is too lazy to do a real study.

At least some agencys pay the 28.5 cents per mile rate. The Forest Service refuses to pay that rate. Their argument is that we are always committed to using an agency vehicle, so if a GOV is available and we travel in a POV we only get 12.5 cents per mile. Which does not even pay for my gas any more and my car gets about 25 miles per gallon. I rarely travel by POV any more on government business. Both the 28.5 and 12.5 cents per mile rates need to be raised.

Which brings me to another complaint. Several years ago, we were literally forced to give up our own fleet to use GSA vehicles. They cost the taxpayers a fortune.
GSA mandated fleet needs to go!

They raise the mileage on the one that no one use. Unless you put in fror a government car and if they don't have one, well then you can claim the 0.585. But the ones that drive there on automobile. They have not given us nothing in the last three years. We still get the 0.285. Why don't they give us the high-mileage driver some more money. The ones that do all of the traveling don't get anything. Because they don't want the hassle of the government car and the restriction on them. You can't go no where but to work from the motel and to eat and back to motel.
