55 mph worked for more than 30 years after the 1970's oil crisis, who is not samrt enought to think it would not work again? in fact walking would be even better and maybe americans can once again become physically fit.

We would save much move gas, if the Traffic Engineers would go back to Synchronized Traffic Lights on main roads, like it was some years ago. I stop at almost every light on my way to go anywhere.

I definitly feel lowering the national speed limit to 55 would not only save gas, but also lives. It would need to be enforced to be effective. It's been proven driving over 60 mph uses more gas. People need to slow down and give theirselves more time to get somewhere. I don't see how this would make more congestion if people keep moving along. If it's set to 55 mph, most people will drive 60 mph. John Warner has the right idea.

I can't help but wonder why WE should have a shortage of oil here. Is it possible that the USA is both exporting oil to other countries, and importing from other
countries? If so, why not keep what we have and stop importing? I believe we have massive oil reserves here, as well, that are being hoarded, likely for the purpose of driving up prices. Before we blame foreigners for high costs, maybe we'd better "clean up our own back yard."

I'm not in favor of reducing the speed limit, as it would end up as so many other gov't initiatives: an ineffective added "law" without any hope of enforcement or positive results. We need a strong, aggressive, multi-pronged approach to address the energy crisis.

I have started using my cruise control to maintain the current 65 MPH on the interstate. It has allowed me to get an extra 2 miles per gallon on fuel consumption. However, I do not feel the government should lower the limits. People have to take responsibility for their own actions. If they want to save gas/money, they need to slow down. We do not need dictators telling us what to do. We are supposed to be a free society.....

As mentioned by a police officer from the Army in Lima, a mile a minute is more acceptable and if there is to be a national speed limit again, I support 60mph. However, experience tells me that so little enforcement of the current speed limits exists that unless the automakers go along with it and build into the autos being sold govenors to control the top speed it won't matter. We are not a law abiding nation when it comes to speed limits.
