Cabaniss Quits FLRA: Remaining Member Gets Big Bucks to Do Little or Nothing

Bob----was there any real purpose to your article? if you wanted to notify your readers of Cabaniss' resignation fine. But why be sarcastic/antagonistic towards Carol Pope? Should she quit her job because no decision can be issued? It is not her fault that the administration and congress do not treat the FLRA as a priority in filling positions. She will continue to review memoranda and decisions and vote on them and wait for new members to do the same. That is all she can do. But to insinuate she should not be paid because there is nothing to do is wholly unfair and impinges your own credibility as a commentator.

Couldn't agree more. I'm not sure if Mr. Gilson is blogging, commentary, or journalist when he writes. He does get a lot of responses on the web site, so I guess that is a positive for the advertisers. Ms Pope now joins the ranks of the other Managers who have nothing to do, but still get paid.

Don't Americans deserve a government that works? It is hard to understand why our governmental agencies are so crippled by the lack of effective management by this current administration. I'm suprised that someone did't come out to say "You're doing a good job Dale"

Gilson's turning of the July 14 resignation of Authority head Cabaniss into a rant against the one remaining member of the Authority must make even his supporters at FedSmith wonder which way his head is screwed on. In the destruction of federal labor law that the Bush administration has accomplished through its appointments to the Authority, to the FLRA's General Counsel and to the FSIP, Authority Member Pope's well reasoned dissents to terrible Authority decisions has been the one slight bit of legal integrity that has shown through the whole mess of the last eight years. If that mess is now crumbling, so be it. But don't try to besmirch by unjustified innuendo what has stood the test of recent years of darkness.

You obviously read the article from your unique perspective.

The author isn't ranting against the remaining member of the Authority--he just points out she won't be issuing any decisions and won't have much to do. As issuing decisions is the primary function of the agency and it won't be performing its primary function but we will be paying her salary even though Congress has not seen fit to take any action on the President's nominees that would make the agency functional.

Pointing out the truth of the matter isn't popular--but it is accurate. Your beef should be with Congress and not the author of the article.

With Congress and its pathetic leadership enjoying an 18% out of 100% approval rating, I seriously doubt we can rely on it to do anything. To blame the author of the article for FLRA's ills will not solve anything either. And of course there will be those who will blame Bush personally for this situation. Maybe we could just put a sign on the door saying "Closed For Lack of Interest" and transfer all "essential" personnel to another agency.

Gee Bob, the FLRA is in the toilet and you choose to focus on what the remaining member might do with her time? How constructive. Oh, and she's the remaining "Democrat" member? I guess that's because the "Republic" member resigned. What else you got on the Fox News Talking Points Memo there, Bob?

Mr. Gilson, your suggestions about how Member Pope will occupy her time are inflammatory. Member Pope has proven herself to be a dedicated, hard-working FLRA official. Anyone familiar with the agency knows that any suggestion otherwise is completely false and baseless. I feel confident that Member Pope will continue to review cases and vote them as necessary. It is not her fault that her Republican counterparts abandoned ship, leaving her with no quorum of votes.

Perhaps you should have said "Shame on the U.S. Congress for not even taking up a vote on the nominees." Republican or Democrat--people leave at the end of an administration. Of course, those with a partisan rant will take anything up to support their cause regardless of the nature of the situation, as you have chosen to do here.

Yes, you're absolutely right, HR Spec. Let's have Congress take a serious look at the Dale Cabaniss 2.0 nominee. Brilliant idea.

All you have to do to see who is dragging their feet is ask one simple question. The committee chair is the one person that can set the agenda to schedule a hearing on approval of these particular nominations. Who is the committee chair? Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman is the chair and he spends most of his time with John McCain. Go figure.

Spoken like a good little Democrat. Obama and Hillery will be proud of you. Make sure you get your "gold star" for being a good little drone!
