Can Major Changes in Government Happen Quickly and Easily?

I would love for this to pass since I already put in 10-12 hrs a day, but do it 5 days a week. But, if the intent is to somehow conserve energy, I doubt it will do so. It will just be another day to spend on the road for most, so where's the conservation? Home utilities will go up, and for most businesses, you can't completely shutdown the electricity, gas, etc., to reflect a considerable savings. And, (I know I'll get blasted for this one) there are a lot of employees who only produce 5-6 hrs of work in an 8 hr day now, so what will businesses get out of a 10 hr day?

I work a ten hour tour currently. When my department converted to this option our workload was looked, we are held accountable to the workload management said that we meet in a ten hour tour.

I've worked 10 hour days and it is wonderful. I don't think you spend any more money. As a matter of fact, I think I saved money. I did all my cleaning, washing, and shopping on my day off. Then I had two days to spend with my family. And, I also had more energy on Sunday to prepare some meals for the coming week. As for utilities, I'd have to do most of the stuff on the weekend anyway. And, I don't think that the increase cost of utilities would come anywhere near the same amount as the cost of gas. This could be a win-win for both the government and employee.

I have been working a 4 day 10 hour week since the 1980's. Don't all agencies have the ability to switch to a compressed work week?

I think that all agencies have the ability to allow 10 hour days, but not all of them do. We are not allowed to work more than 9 hours a day.

I have been with the government for over 20 years. I know some people would have taken early retirement offered except after the gas prices and everything shot up in cost, the could not retire.
I would love a 4 day work week and I am sure alot of other government employees would too.

I asked my boss for this change of tour. He, in turn, asked his boss for this because in the VA an employee's change of tour goes up the chain of command for final approval. The director denied my request - even though I had justifications for this change for me and the person I car pool with. I was astonished when it was denied beucase it would save the facility money (i.e., Saturday overtime shift -clinic- could be cancelled and scheduled during the work week).

AFGE VA CBA has in place the ability to have a compressed work tour. This measure will not be easy for management to swallow history shows much resistance. Management fights us tooth and nail any time the union attempt to place a group on a compressed work tour. Congress already passed the compressed work tour law, instead of offering up another congress should request that management follow the law that is in place and work with the unions in partnership to implement ten hour work days wherever possible.

I would love to work 4 days a week! It would save me a commute every Friday, which would save me money over the course of the year. I would love it if the govt would move all of us to a 4 day week.

Personally I see an overall benefit to four ten hour days. An office with sufficient staff could have a certain number with Mondays off and other's with Friday office. It would make the office hours a bit longer which would benefit applicants/borrower's who work. They could either stop in earlier in the day or a bit later in the evening.

Although I love the idea, I'm wondering how senior management will squeeze in the 14 or 15 hour days. You know if this passed working 10 would only be the minimum. Add the commute time in the DC area and I may as well just sleep at work for the four days. The 8 hour day that I get paid for is already 10 -12 hours and on a good day a 90 min commute out of the city. You know to get ahead you got to put the hours in. You want to do something to make people happy? Fix the traffic problems in the area. Trying to leave DC going north before 8:00 pm is a nightmare. How about spreading the Agency HQ's in DC out around the region and end this never ending joke poeple face getting to work everyday.
