Make it work. Hold federal employees accountable for their workday.

What makes you think that the federal employee is not responsible for their work week. As an employee, I determine my work schedule for the week. I don't need someone else to tell me how to work. My PD says with little or no supervison. That means when I get my job done on time and it is done correctly, then I have managed my time and I am ACCOUNTABLE. HOW ABOUT YOU?

Agree it should be an option for Federal agencies, but not mandatory, only if would not have a negative impact on individual agencies. I currently work five ten hour days because of workload, and am almost nonfunctional and physically drained by the time I get home. Glad this is not my normal tour of duty and I can opt out at any time.

For the last six years I worked, I was on a 4-10 schedule. Now, it might not be adviseable for
ALL employees to work that schedule. Yet, there are
so many advantages to it for the employee, that perhaps it's the best option available. The employee
still works 40 hours a week and has an entire work
day free for personal things.

I concur with OPMs assessment. Individual agencies are best to determine their needs and they do have flexible schedules, many versions, available. I work a maxi flex that emulates a 5/8 schedule. That way I can adjust my arrival/departure times as needed but always advise the manager of any changes - and I am the union rep!

Concur with OPM. There are several flexible/alternate work schedules available, as options, but I would not mandate 4 10-hour days. For those that want to work 4-10's and can't, they'll like the idea. But for others who have children and other family/personal issues, mandating a compressed work schedule could be more a hardship. Having worked a compressed work schedule for years and watched others work four 10's, the RDO is great but most don't really put in a 10-hour day. A 5-4/9 is probably more productive.

I think OPM is right on the mark with this one. Response is well-thought-out.

I do not understand the slant of the writer's article, especially the title. The Congressman felt the 4 day schedule, where the employee could work 4 out of 5 working days at 10 hours a day, would be a good idea. He asked OPM to study the idea. OPM studied and rejected it. Why the slanted title?

The article was primarily an explanation of what OPM said in the letter. It was OPM's slant in the article it seems to me.

As for a headline, perhaps it should have been worded like a government memo in the manner we have all come to know and love. Or, perhaps, the editor was trying to create some interest in the subject with a catchy title. I thought it was good. Must be a slow day at work in the IRS though.

The Four Day Work Week works great for the Internal Revenue Service. Others should be more agreeable to providing that option.

I believe it technically exists now...but it has the potential of being abused (see my later response). Not only that, but tyring to figure out a schedule if a number of people wanting to do it would be a nightmare.
