Four Day Workweek Strikes A Chord With Readers

I worked a 4-day workweek for several years using credit hours and a flexible work schedule, and loved it. The longer day was at first tiring, but I quickly became used to it. While mandating obviously won't work because one-size-doesn't-fit-all, expanding access to a 4-day week (on a voluntary basis) would be a wonderful thing to many employees and beneficial environmentally and economically.

Many of our employees here would LOVE to work the 4/10, but Indianapolis VA management is too archaic to even consider it at this office. This is a progressive idea that is already in effect with many local and state governments, and their 'customers' have seen little or no negative impact. A happy employee is a productive employee!

It should be implemented slowly for it would be very hard to get everone and all systems 'on-board' and functioning normally. I do think it should be tried for if it works it could be very beneficial.

I think there would be a huge impact for the good. However, I also think that the govement could do a required 9 hour work day and use the savings to cover the extra 1 hours a day being lost. So it would be a 72 hours work week, but get paid for 80 hours. This would improve recuitment, moral and show concern for the enviroment. I would also suggest that "Wednesday" would be a great day to close most Federal offices. I even think production would increase with having to only work two days at a time. The need for sick leave would be reduced as most doctor appointments could be scheduled for that day off. All in all- I think this would be a win-win situation.

I don't know if it's still prevalent, but back in the days when my Mom and my Aunt were both nurses working for different medical pratices in different municipalities, Wednesday's were the days the doctors' offices were closed, the doctors were on the golf course and I was periodically treated to a Girls' Day out with my (single) Aunt and the girl cousins.

So having Wednesdays off still might not solve our "doctor's appointments without using leave" problem. But thanks for letting me take that little stroll through Nostalgiaville!

I suggest an alternate or modified plan. “Every other Friday off.” The entire agency works eight 9 hour days, on the ninth day the employees work 8 hours, and the entire agency is off on Friday the 10th day. This plan saves gas and utilities. This plan has already been in use for years and is a great success at both Boeing Aerospace in St Louis, MO, and at Keesler AFB, MS.

Should we shut down the Air Traffic system every other Friday. Maybe we can let the prison guards have a day off. There are a lot of agencies that do do just sit at desks all day.
