It's work, but worth it

I guess I have a different view than the other posters here. Sure the application process is HORRIBLE.

But the pension and job security is worth a bit (ok, a LOT) of work, hassle, repeated applications, etc.

There is a lot of the "good ole boy" network still. Getting hired in is hard work, but can be done.

Less than 20% of the current Fed jobs are inherently governmental. What OPM should be doing is A76 every activity and turning it over to contractors or if feds win the workforce will be cut in half. Its a win for the taxpayers

And I suppose you believe your job is inherently governmental?

We have a mixed bag of military, DOD civilian, and contractor. With great respect to many of the contractors with excellent skills and dedication, most don't "buy in" to the mission with the same dedication as the military and DOD civilians. The government folks will put in that extra effort to get the job done. The contractors stop precisely where the contract description says to, (sometimes a wee bit sooner.) OK, that is the deal...but it shows a serious problem with over-contracting.

They don't save us money...who is counting the costs of the contracting office, the residual organizations, the little extra small contracts to take care of the stuff missed in the main contract, etc.

Sure, janitors can be contracted. They tried to contract the office help but the background knowledge of the civil servant was a tremendous and impossibe to quantify advantage. Fortunately it wasn't a CA-76 so we are baack.

And...I believe in Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy! And just what is a Diversity Manager? Sounds like a made up job to promote a "favorite" and use up the taxpayer's precious dollars. By the way, are you a contractor?

Ever since "Diversity Manager" began posting replies, I've wondered whether this person is for real. If he or she really thinks that the function is to "make sure quotas were in place and that the best and brightest did not qualify" then s/he owes it to DoL to leave the position & go somewhere else, preferably outside of government. Someone truly commited to "diversity" recognizes the importance of a diverse workforce & strives to implement it. I wonder if "Diversity Manager's" superiors within DoL are aware of his/her real feelings about "diversity"?

My husband retired after 25 years in the US Army, Finance and Accounting, as a 1SG. He has been applying for jobs for the past eight years - told each time not eligible without even an interview. Either OPM or hiring supervisors are not paying attention. So please tell me how someone can get into Federal Service these days with great credentials.

He should be filing VEOA and USERRA appeals.

Without seeing your husband's application vs the positions themselves, there can be any number of reasons why none of the attempts have been successful. If he has been told he is not eligible for a position applied for, there will be no interview; the best he could hope for is that someone will explain why he was found ineligible. As for "not paying attention" - maybe they WERE paying attention, not only to him but to many other applicants. While I hope your husband finds what he is looking for, getting hired, in or out of government, is, like everything else in life, a crapshoot - whether winning the lottery, getting married, or surviving a tour of military service. Contrary to what the "Prof" might have you believe, no one is automatically entitled to a job in government. Even a 30% disabled vet has to compete with other disabled vets.

I applied for a job with the US Forest Service about 9 months ago and I have not heard a word from them yet. Most people I talk to tell me that it takes forever to get hired by the US Government and that you usually are not even told that you did not get the job if you are not selected. Maybe if federal employers thought of employees as human beings instead of human resources recruitment would not be so hard.

This is a common practice in private industry and if the federal government truly wants to get the best and the brightest they need to implement similar processes. I think that it would be well worth it to have someone bring in 5 high quality candidates a week. Private industry pays 30% of an employee's salary if they use an agency. The DC average salary is $77K. So 30% is $22K then times 5 is $110K if I went through an agency for those 5 people. If I use the employee in your scenario it only cost me about me one week off or about $1470 before taxes (cost for 1 week off). Seems like a good investment to me, oh wait this is what we call a recruiter.
