Federal Employees's 2009 pay Raise

Why does everyone assume that federal employees are not taxpayers? We are - just as much as the folks in the private sector who whine when they read about our raises. Sometimes we pay more than our fair share. Everything we make is taxed. I am one of the 'rest of the US' - by the time money is taken out for the raise in our health care premiums - there is NO RAISE! If you are one of those who are living off "the system" - quit your complaining when I get a piddling raise and do something useful with your time - like volunteer to help those less fortunate than you.
Oh, and, one more thing - for those of you who think the President put us in this mess - go back and re-read your government/history books - it's Congress - not the President who has all the power. He can only veto what they vote on.

That's some convoluted logic. The taxpayers pay you and by default they are getting a refund on their tax dollars. I like Fed Taxpayers to a Discover card where the REAL taxpayers get 2/3% back on their purchases

If you're paying any part of your income for taxes, then by definition you're a REAL taxpayer, whether you're employed by the public or private sector. I don't want to see innocent people in the private sector suffering, but I'm a little tired of (1) non-Feds who look down their noses at Federal employees & (2) self-hating, self-loathing Fed employees who insist on sucking up to the Fed-haters on the outside. If you can't support & get behind the majority of Feds who do their jobs to the best of their ability, then get the hell out & DON'T wait until retirement to do so.

You start out complaining, and then whine about people who complain. The President has a lot of power, he can propose Tax cut legislation, Education bills, the budget, and influence the Fed Chairman to lower interest rates, start wars, Bailouts, etc.... 2.9% is still a pretty good raise, when we are on the brink of total financial system destruction. You should get on your knees and kiss the taxpayers feet, and do everything you can to help them keep their jobs. That way they can maybe be ok with you getting a 2.9% raise when many of them will see no raise and increased insurance costs. Your logic is so convoluted that maybe you would benefit from using some of those benefits and talk to a counselor.

Kiss the taxpayers feet? Doyou really think this way? If so, you need to seek professional assistance..... Oh, and if people in the private sector are envious of my job, they can apply for positions just like I and every other Fed did.

No, the raise will be 2.9% and the cap will be $153,300. Will that be enough for you?

Every time I see someone make a posting in response to someone else that has hit the pay cap I notice that it is always negative comment. Jealousy is a dangerous thing. If you hit the pay cap and most people do not; however, those who do deserve a raise as well. Maybe they have moved and made other sacrifices to get to where they are and it is not fair that some get a raise and others do not. If it is earned it is earned and people should not be told they should be happy with what they have…by the way I am a GS-9 and I am working to get to the top and I don’t want to be capped when I get there….

While I agree with the gist of your posting, I believe that people who have reached their cap should be more discreet when they ask pay questions. It just makes them seem ungrateful or as if they are looking down on others. Not saying they are, but appearances mean alot and if they are at that level, it is assumed they know how to navigate the waters. Besides, do they really think that lower level workers are going to have those kind of answers?

If you think a guy who's reached his pay cap is so out of touch with reality that he/she doesn't know whether the annual cost of living adjustment (not pay raise) affects them or not, then you're the one that's out of touch. The question was inflammatory for a reason and it wasn't written by somebody who's reached his pay cap.

If they do not speak up for themselves nobody else will...just look at all the negative responses that have been posted. As I said earlier, jealousy is a very dangerous sentiment. Congress needs to act and get it together....I have friends that actually see a comment in their leave and earnings statement that tells them how many hours of work they are not being paid for because of the pay cap. To me, that sounds illegal....work and not get paid for the hours put in...maybe they should just work the hours they are getting paid for and go home when the clock stops paying them.....

the calculator list of localities for pay calculation do not include Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico. Why not include them in the pay calculator?

We have a very small staff that works hard on a part-time basis to provide a free site for our readers. The calculations for Wage Grade employees and other pay systems outside the GS system use different calculations. We use our limited resources to provide the information that will be as useful as we can make it for the largest number of readers.
