Because FERS employees can get matching funds in TSP, and CSRS do not.......

Finally good news

Well at least if I have to wait for someone to die to get promoted at least the COLA increase will be in my favor.

COLA vs Annual Raise

I understand what COLA is and what the annual raise is, but are current federal employees getting a COLA increase to their salaries as well. I mean, doesn't our cost of living go up just as much as someone who is retired? If we pay more out just to live, then the 3.9% pay raise won't cover it. Also, if COLA goes up for us in any way, will it not go up by as much because we get an annual pay raise? Someone please clarify.

What?

I could not figure out what my CSRS raise is even after reading this, with all the qualifiers, etc. Can't they just say the raise is 5.8% for everyone except (then list the exceptions)?

Many workers in the private sector have it rough. I’ve always realized this could happen and after working in the private sector decades ago I chose to serve in the GOV. I served in the Military, DOD and finished up after over a two decade successful career as a Border Patrol Agent, a total of 31 years. I started under CSRS and didn't bite on the FERS apple when it was offered to switch. Although the GOV didn't contribute to TSP other things under CSRS are fantastic. I put 5% into TSP over the course and moved it into the G Fund before this national fiscal mess happened. Now, at over a year in retirement under 6C coverage, I am happy with my annuity and have the peace of mind of a great steady income I earned through many years of sacrifice. So many others in the private sector are hurting. I am young enough to find other work if I need to. One of the reasons I retired was government employee bellyaching and the incessant whining. I'm thankful and proud of my service.

COLA during first year of retirement

The old CSRS retirement system is based on a look back system. OPM denies this. If you retire in March of this
year, according to OPM, your first COLA will be 9/12 of
the regular COLA for this year. It is officially awared on
December 1, even though you don't receive it until next
year. By awarding it on December 1 of this year, OPM
tries to deny the truth of when it is paid, saying that it
is paid in the current year (it is not). In fact, you get NO
COLA for remainder of the year in which you retire. Is
this not fraud?
