I used to work for the IRS. Although I did not have access to or deal directly with the taxpaypers or their personal information, all IRS employees are subject to UNAX (Unauthorized Access) rules and have to be annually recertified. This RO was terminated for this violation at the State level. Who is to say this would not occur in the future where access is not just at the local State level, but to all US taxpayers globally. Other IRS employees have been terminated for inappropriate access to taxpayper information. If you are not assisting the taxpayper, you should not be accessing the account.

This doesn't make sense. An actual removal of someone with appeal rights should get the opportunity to reply, however, if she was on a probationary period she shouldn't have had any opportunity to reply. Am I missing something here?

This seems very unfair the employee had been "been disciplined for "inappropriately accessing" tax information. (Opinion p. 2)". This was past problem it should assumed the employee learned from past problem and now knew better now. I know this is a very serious issue in the IRS, and I agree it should be, but once the problem is discovered and in case the employee disciplined by a the state in which it happen, forget it an move on. We all make mistake and once the we pay the price for those mistakes we should be able to move forward.

Don't you find it curious that this woman was trying to get back into the same line of work? Have to wonder what her real plans were...

I guess I am one those idiots who believe people live and learn and maybe sometime share those painful learning experiences with others and prevent others from making the same mistakes. I really hate to think the worst of people and would not want believe this person was trying to get a job to repeat the illegal actions. So I will remain in engineering and let others do HR. You know I work in a profession where failure has been a great and sometimes painful teacher so maybe I have bias towards things people learn form failures and how the problems that cause failures can fixed and the same mistakes hopefully not repeated, but those are physical systems failures not human behavior failures.
