put an address label on everything!

i work damaged mail and we get thousands and thousands of ripped envelopes from automation each night. only an extremely small percentage of mail is sorted by hand. there are thousands and thousands of dollars in cash and gift cards lost each and every night. we cannot find owners and unless you have proof that the gift card is yours, you've lost it. it is particularly sad that so many thousands of pictures are lost and damaged each and every night. paper envelopes seem to be cheaper and unable to withstand automated equipment. use substantial paper and label everything so it may be sent back to you in a baggie if destroyed by automated equipment.

don't leave your carrier an envelope in your mail box for his faithful service. it gets thrown into his sack and dumped into the dumper to begin the automated process. he does not have the time to read envelopes to see if any are addressed to him.
