Ralph, for the first time and probably the last, I have to give you a compliment. The advice you gave on when to use or not use your sick leave was solid and should be strictly followed. Good article. By the way the legislation you referenced is one AFGE is aggressively backing.

I have never understood why people think its ok to come to work with a cold, flu, or virus and infect the healthy people. It is selfish, rude, and inconsiderate. Not only do you put the people in your work place at risk but what about the families of the people you infect? I have young children and elderly people in my life and transmitting germs to them could be life threatening. If you can't afford to live off your savings when you retire consider a second job instead of banking on unused sick leave.

This is a truly outstanding article. What's the bottom line? Are a few sick days really going to make that much difference in you final annuity?? And if you really feel like you're getting short-changed, go ahead and take your sick days before you retire. Most federal employees don't have that many days of sick leave anyway because they use them as they earn them

this seems like a no brainer. sick leave is for use when one is sick. so, if you're sick use it; if not, don't. i don't want people coming to work sick in an effor to hoard their sick leave for a potential pay off.

The question of should I use my sick leave this year or save it based on legistation that might be passed is NO. The sick leave saved can make the difference of making your monthly payments or losing everything. All of us have worked with people who have long term illness, unexpected accidents or injuries when we cannot work for week and sometimes months. Think back to what you earned when you started with your Federal career. If you started out at $12.00/hr and now make $24.00/hr, that sick leave benefit has doubled in value and continues to grow in value as your salary increases. Most financial advicers tell us to have 4-8 months of expenses in an emergency fund. My sick leave saved provides my family with this fund.
I choose to save my sick leave and not risk my financial future in case I cannot work in the future.

SAVE YOUR SICK LEAVE by all means. Two years ago I had open heart surgery. I was off work for a couple of months, and could only work part time for a couple more months. You wont know 'till you've been there, but believe thee me it was a comfort to know that all the sick leave I had saved was there for me when I needed it and I didn't have to beg for donations from co-workers and strangers. Trust me, it is the cheapest insurance you could possibly have.

As a retired FERS employee who left with a large amount of unused sick leave, I would be interested to know whether there is any consideration being given to providing some sort of benefit to those employees who retired prior to enactment of the proposed legislation.
