He already has one foot out the door, so, if you can't say anthing nice then don't say anything at all.

aside from kneecapping the terrorists who stuck US targets at will during the 90's w/o fear of reprisals....sure, this is the best thing he's done.

I had hoped he would clean house at the VA before he left so the Vets would get the care they deserve!!

You're right about cleaning house at the VA. Unfortunately, the so called psychiatrists there are so wrapped up in hate-talk instead of taking care of the veterans that they institutionalize their lack of care for the veterans. That's just one of many examples of those who spend so much time talking about compassion being the least compassionate.

OR NOT!!!

I know I am in the minority after reading several of the 60+ postings below, but MY preference would have been that Dec. 26 hadn't been declared a holiday, as a symbolic gesture if nothing else.

With the unemployment rate soaring and the economy tanking, to give Federal Employees another paid holiday when we already get four more holidays than much of the private sector (most don't get MLK, President's, Columbus or Veterans Day), in my opinion sends the wrong message in the uncertain economic times in which we're living. We're just fortunate that Congress and the President determine our benefits, pay raises etc. because if it was done by the popular vote of the taxpayers, I'm afraid we'd be about as popular as Congress, and we wouldn't fare very well. And having this extra holiday doesn't make the Federal Employee any more popular, that's for sure!!

Here we go again. DOI Manager, your view is in the majority, not the minority on this site. This "holiday" was no doubt declared because this President, like almost all before him, probably sees it as just another annual ritual for the holiday season, like lighting the White House Christmas tree. The government employees who are supposedly the beneficiaries of this gesture are, in reality, little more than actors playing a bit part in the scene. As for other holidays - some employers provide different holidays, depending on their location, local customs, etc. I've said it before on this issue - if the 26th was NOT designated a day off, would the negative public image of federal employees still exist? It wouldn't make a dime's worth of difference.

Thank you President Bush! Readers need to understand this is also a financial decision as it costs so much money to close the government for one day and then reopen for only one day. But it is always appreciated so thank you again Mr. President and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays!
