For 20 years I have been robbed while those in the private sector have received both Soc. Sec. benefits and company pensions without limitation. Since the Government has seen fit to give bailouts to others - why not help those retired individuals who have been loyal workers and dedicated patriots.

SUAA and many other organizations in the state of Illinois have been working on the repeal of the WEP and OP for a number of years. Because it only affects a dozen states and certain counties in another 3 states, Congress has been slow to act. Especially due to the economy and the Federal bail-outs Congress should be looking at how they can help those individuals who have been affected by loss of income due to this unique pension agreement. Those who did not spend their full working life in the affected pension systems can lose up to 60% of their paid-in Social Security. It seems to affect women and widows who most likely were at the lower end of the pay scale anyway. So while Congress is spending money, they need to put emphasis on those individuals who are not able to collect the money they have already paid into the system. Take away the penality. Those not affected are of high income or those who have been in the related penison system for their entire working life.

I recently retired from the United States Postal Service after 44 years of dedicated service. Although I currently do not have enough periods to qualify for SS, if I decided to go out and work for the private sector, I too will be joining the ranks of federal employees unjustly penalized by this unfair legislation, enacted by a short sighted congress and a conservative president, Ronald Regan.
My spouse, who earned her own SS benefits, will also suffer, as her pension will be reduced by receiving survivor annuity.
The 2009 bill should be enacted. Contact your congressman or senator to support this bill. The federal workforce is huge. They will stand up and listen!

I have been writing to my reps in the House and Senate urging them to pass this since it was first introduced. My Senator, who is also one of the bill's sponsors, told me last year that it had been placed on hold and would probably not come up for discussion until sometime this year, if at all. If every CSRS federal retiree takes the time to write or email their representatives, perhaps we can make a difference. It just seems to me that we are the forgotten ones notwithstanding our years of service to our government. We are taxed on our incomes regardless of how little we get unlike straight Social Security recipients. In states like mine, we also pay state and local taxes plus school taxes because our pensions are taxed by the federal government. Deduct the taxes and reduced social security benefits and we don't have sufficient income to live on. How could anyone in their right minds consider this "a windfall?"

NO CHANCE OF RETIRING

The State of Illinois is among various states that prohibit people from collecting social security and teachers retirement fund. I can't even collect widow's social security benefit. Had I known this, I would have not quit a lucrative position to go into teaching, where my salary was reduced by 60%. This means I will have to be a public "servant" until I no longer can work -not enough time into teacher retirement system (33 years of service required)....hopefully my son will take care of me after spouse dies.

The Social Security Fairness Act of 2009 will be the Social Security Fairness Act of 2010 and so on and on. This act has been introduced and re-introduced for over 25 years under a different bill number. Members of Congress receive an unreduced annuity at age 50 with 20 years service or at any age with 25 years of service. Congress also just voted themselves a raise raising their salary to over $169,000 a year. Talk about fairness!! I had to retire due to base closure, which Congress voted, with less than 40 years of service. Under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS), one has to work 42 years or more to even receive 80% (the maximum) of their 3-year high average salary. Also, under the private sector, employers provide 401(k) for their employees. Unlike those in the CSRS, the federal government did not provide 401(k) to civil service employees so it is only our retirement we are counting on. I had to retire due to base closures, but my obligations are still the same and my salary has been greatly reduced. My retirement pay does not even equal ¼ of what our representatives or senators make a year. My deceased husband paid into social security for over 20 years, yet I am being denied in receiving social security. My husband contributed to the Social Security's Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) for over 20 years and I as his survivor, am entitled to this insurance. I and the rest of those who worked in public service should not be denied by our Senators and Congressmen to receive what we are entitled to. It’s about time that we get mad and not let another year go by without its passage. I just retired last year and to read that retired public servants have been denied in receiving their deceased husband’s social security and that this has been going on for over 25 years is sickening. Most of our colleagues have passed on in poverty due to this unfairness and it’s time to fight for our fair share.
