Forget the cost cutting measures. It's the bailout, stupid. Free money just for the asking. Mr. Obama loves his unions at the expense of the taxpayer, so take from the rich (whatever Mr. Obama decides) and give to the poor old post office. Don't worry, be happy. Ain't socialism wunnerful.

The cost office could slash their rates significantly by getting the Mormon kids and the Jehovah’s witnesses to deliver the bulk main for free while they are handing out watchtowers. This would serve a multitude of purposes one being that you could avoid that annoying junk mail by hiding from them when they knock

The Postal Service's problems have long been endemic and steadily worsening, and are only being exacerbated - not created - by the current recession. Look instead to declining mail volume as the public massively shifts to electronic communication channels, inefficient work procedures bound up in union contracts, inordinately high labor costs, etc. The "solution" to allow the USPS to "engage in long term borrowing" is no solution at all, and will only delay the need to take even more drastic action once the added burden of debt has been added to the mix. IThe congressional reaction to the proposal to give the USPS the authority to cut back on Saturday delivery service is also symptomatic of the political meddling that has long baeen the bane of efforts to bring costs into line with the realities of the evolving economic and social climate. Absent a recognition of the "ground truth" facing the USPS, the organization appears to be embarked upon a classic downward asymtotic curve.

As a rural carrier I'm probably going to get about a 10% to 15% pay cut after March 14 because of the decline in the mail volume. If my pay is cut because of the mail volume, wouldn't it be fair for all USPS employees' salaries to be cut not just frozen. Now that would save the USPS a lot of money!
