I am with you 100%. The worst part about it is if this exact plan was a Republican driven plan they would run into little conflict with those speaking out against it now, all the conflict then would be coming from the Democrats.

According to our President last night, this is a republican spending plan that he inherited. Hah!

I think he forgot who has controlled the House and Senate for the past two years, and it was he, was it not, that broke his promises on transparency in the budget process AND signed off on 9,000 earmarks.

The Republicans are 40% of Congress and had 40% of the earmarks. What is your point? Republicans will not and cannot do better. You are just bitter because you are out of power...for a long, long time...lol

Regardless of party, our Rights under the Constitution are being userped by our Government. The Government hates the Constitution because it is a document that is supposed to limit what the Government can do. The Constitution is for us "The People" and not the Government. Government doesn't believe in "Rights" for the people. Government only believes in its rights. People are fed up. Time to throw all of these bums out of office.

Yes, I am an independent and over the years have crossed political lines at the vooting booth. I strong agree with you, I continue to get e-mails (some hate mail) from some of my Republican friends. We don't need this, we MUST unite around our President and work through problems common to all of our citizens.

Thank you for speaking out what I was feeling. This is one of the most improtant times in history and we need to really pull together!

While I applaud your comments and the intent of your message you forget that this president is attempting to achieve radical changes that are socialistic in nature. You proclaim that we all should support and get behind a president that is using fear and scare tactics to undermine the individual rights of the american citizen faster than any other president in modern history. A huge number of economists who are qualified to be analyzing our economic woes are saying the president is shooting our economy in the heart with his enourmous spending of ghost dollars, among these are numerous Nobel Prize winners. Perhaps you think we need to stop making so much noise about cloaked efforts to take away our individual rights to keep and bare arms. I hope that somehow we survive as a nation but based on projections of the deficits his policies are going to incite I doubt that this country will continue to stand as one nation in my life time and for sure not in my children's. Keep quite? Right!

This is a good example of the divisive misinformation out there. Restoring the tax rate for wealthy individuals to what is was under Reagan in no way can be considered socialism.

Socialism is the government ownership and management of business. I guess The Republican's in Congress are Socialist!! Liberalism is the regulation of an independent economy. Please get your definitions right or people may call you Facists, also incorrectly. In fact, I know people who call the Young Republicans the Hitler Youth, also incorrectly. There is even poltical writings that say that right wing philosophy is , racist, backwards, based on superstion, Ati thinking and anti science, authoritarian etc. Lets not call each other name.

I think the author is signing on to an economic disaster with the current Administration's SPENDING plan. Investment is just another term for SPENDING.

What ever happened to SAVING? I have written Congressmen and others indicating that we should encourage SAVINGS--for example, why not use TARP money to help banks support 5% on regular savings accounts and encourage indivudual savings, not more borrowing and spending, which is what got us in this mess in the first place. Banks could use these assets for investing in the economy and we could see solid, sustained growth.

I was born in 1953 and I remember buying "Defense Savings Bond Stamps" in elementary school to encourage savings--0.25 a week would get us a $25 savings bond at the end of the year. Our leaders should bring these wholesome values back.

And, Mr. Varnick, this is not a political statement, but one that makes sense for the long-term health of the economy.

What say you?

This article was refreshing in that it attempts to create a pro-active way to get us out of this mess. Is Obama's plan the right plan? Who know, only God knows what will happen. Am I worried about all the spending? You'd better believe it. Am I mad about AIG, Bank of America and Wall Street? Mad enough that I'd put some people in jail for a long, long time if I could. Let's face it, both parties have their hands dirty in this entire debacle. Let's debate the best way forward for the country and take the best educated path to recovery. One person talks about 5% savings accounts. That's great but with banks paying 5% you won't see 5% mortgages. One talks about Obama the socialist, but is the health care system in dire need of help? If you don't think so, let me ask you how are you going to afford health care when you retire? Medicare? Federal employee health benefits? You had better roll up your sleeves and get to work cause at this rate you & I will not be able to afford it

Excellent Article. We need to start bringing this country together. Let's give our president a chance. The political negativity has trickled down into every day life making people depressed, bitter and angry. I would also suggest staying away from the negative radio talk shows.

First I voted for Obama. Second, I generally support his policies
I agree with your idea that we must not spread around lies. I disagree that we must support the President even if we disagree with his policies. I will use Bush's, policies, which I opposed for examples.
I opposed the war in Iraq as the reasons were based on lies. No nuclear material was found. Nothing was found to support the reasons for the invasion. Hussein was a pig. But there are other pigs we are not overthrowing. Therefore, I could not support Bush.
Bush's tax policies were for the rich. They include larger tax cuts for the wealthy, dividend tax cuts for the wealthy, and other things. The middle class got crumbs. Services for the middle class and the poor were cut.
I could not support Bush's contracting out of federal jobs to reward his contracting friends. They were failures for the most part.
These are just a few examples of why we need the talking heads even if we disagree with them

I love this guy.

I have followed some of the comments in various forums and been continually amazed at the amount of hatred and misinformation conveyed. I did support Obama's election, but honestly believe that none of us -- and that includes the whole world -- can afford for him to fail in his overall efforts to "fix" the American economy. It's so refreshing to see someone advocating a positive approach and for FedSmith to publish it. Thanks to the author and FedSmith.
