I have, for many years, been so enamoured of Bob Hope's love for the military and respect for the sacrifices they've made for our country. There's no nobler deed than to honor him, and a commemorative stamp is just as good as any! We live in the best country in the world, and our troops are out there day in and day out fighting for our freedom. In this day and age of Obamaism, it doesn't surprise me that this item wasn't mentioned in the mainstream media. No matter what happens in the future, we can still rely on our own hospitable nature and love of our country. To the post offices who ran the events, I salute you!

I have fond memories of Bob Hope as much as the next person; but why did he never serve in the military himself? Especially when he was clearly of age to serve during WWII. And what does "Obamaism" have to do with Bob's life?

nasty - The poster is tying Obamaism with the way the story was covered in the media, not with Bob's life itself as you're trying to tell us.

There is a fundamental difference.

Why was it necessary to bring up Obama's - or any politician's - name in this instance? Bob Hope can be honored without trying to stir up today's political antagonisms. That being said, however - should the fact that he served our country by entertaining the troops under adverse conditions year after year excuse his absence from active duty throughout his long life? Keep in mind the many entertainers, pro athletes, etc, who risked their lives in battle during World War 2..

It's about time, it's always about time. I was a soldier in Korea in 1964 and in Vietnam in 1969; I considered the two Bob Hope shows I attended to be the high points of those tours. Especially the one in Korea, which was held in December, out of doors, in near freezing weather. Not to detract from the beauties that showed up for the Vietnam tour, but taking your clothes off in that weather was nothing compared to the punishment of going about scantily clad in the dead of a Korean winter. God love'm!

About the stamp though. Why was it issued at 42¢ instead of 44¢, the current 1st Class rate?

They also serve who only stand and wait.

Bob Hope would have been in his late 30's when WWII ended, so, if age-eligible to serve, would have only been borderline so. However, many people were exempted from service because of the nature of their civilian contributions. My father -- 3 years older than Hope -- was one. Dad was a Supervisor at Packard Motor Car Company, which was deemed a critical industry in support of the war. Hope made movies supportive of military service, campaigned for war bonds and entertained the troops, all supportive of the war effort. He "served" and earned his honorary membership in the military.

Absurd: Do you think the basis of "Obamaism" is not caring about the troops? Bush never cared enough to provide the troops what they needed given their "ultimate sacrifice". I would suggest "Obamaism" is just as caring, but doesn't make the silly connection between service and "freedom". Saddam had nothing to do with 911, hello!

FDA dude, it's absurd to think any President doesn't care about the troops. Your partisan hysterics have nothing to do with this article, give it a rest.
