I've built up over 1800 hours of sick leave. If the feds won't give me locality pay (Hawaii is too expensive to retire here), then I'll take my pay by using 100% of my sick leave.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I worked as a DOD civilian employee for close to 30 years - entirely in Germany, and can see both sides of the argument. The housing allowanc and the post allowance are great benefits - while one is still employed. However, upon retirement, you "take it in the shorts", because retirement pay is based on your base pay.
I suggest that a "pseudo" base pay be used - only for retirement purpoes, based on the "all other locations" pay in the U.S. This "pseudo pay" would be used only for calculating the retirement pay.
This would be fair to both the taxpayers and the employees. Because I wanted to retire in Germany, I did make a conscious decision to forgoe the higher benefit I would have received by working my last 3 years in the U.S. However, the government did not to spend approx. $80,000 to ship me back to the U.S. with all of my belongings.
Does anybody else think this would be a good idea?MQ2S8
