Once a thriving idustrial nation with the brightess minds in innovation. Now we have de-indusrialized our nation. Our schools are have become cess pools. We have lost our competitive spirit. We have let our government take control of our states and most of our rights and demand them to fix all the problems when government is the cause for all of the above. Of course we have to assume some blame as it all started more than fifty years ago when the citizens allowed the government to run out of control without calling them out, now look at the mess we have gotten ourselves into. Shouted down by the minority and having to be so politically correct. You can say anything you want as long as you agree! Yea Right!

Great poll wonder if as a taxpayer will I be able to choose what agency performs their socialism. China is a lot cheaper and i would prefer that all my governmental interactions including taxes be handled by them

All this smearing of government's involvement in running these auto manufacturers. I'm taking a wait and see approach. I doubt the government will be as bad as many seem to thing. If the private CEOs were doing such a great job, why did they need federal monies to save their companies?

Because they had to build cars that nobody wanted but helped meet the MPG numbers mandated by the Governemnt. They also had to contend with the over-priced UAW workers. Just think, we have already had to pay the price for the incompetent fools at the UAW!

Hummers and poor quality ruined GM. Not government mandated MPG ratings.

Whatever dude. I grew up in a UAW factory town. They paid high-school drop-outs over 30 bucks an hour. The UAW ruined the companies.

"Because they had to build cars that nobody wanted but helped meet the MPG numbers mandated by the Gov..."

This is an ignorant statement. How come Honda and Toyota could build cars that everybody wanted AND beat GM's mpg ratings. Of course the UAW was partly responsible but blaming GM's pathetic business model on mpg mandates is NOT part of the problem. I think if you ask anybody, they'd sure love to have increased mpg efficiency in their vehicle.

But factor in all of the things that go against American companies versus their Asian counterparts (e.g., UAW costs, high pay to low-skilled workers, legacy costs, MPG, higher costs, taxing, etc.). When you combine the government MPG standards in, it is just one more stick in the fire.

Personally, I would like to have higher MPG, and right now I would think that the pulse of America would like to have a great car (even an SUV) that got 30 - 40 miles per gallon. I think the real question we should be asking is what is holding the manufacturers back from reaching this goal. Then work to break these barriers. What made America great is our determination to move forward and break barriers . . . especially the barrier of "you can't do that." We put a man on the moon in less than 10 years and mass production came from the American auto industry. Let's get back to that mindset and American way of life.

Maybe you should do the research and see how the MPG for ALL vehicles are factored in. Look beyond the simple statement and READ.

Sell the government stock at a lower price or give some away--but get rid of it. Cut our losses, get out of it, and never do this again.

My dream - to lateral transfer to GM where I will invent a new propulsion system that will result in 150 mpg with zero emissions - then kick back and wait for my $400 award and Certificate of Appreciation spit out by the cheesy printer at the end of the hall. After all, this is the federal government.

I truly think that the gov't needs to remove itself from the auto manufacturing business. An oversight committee for the bailout money is one thing, but the manufacturers know what the public wants and is demanding. Unfortunately American auto industry is behind the foreign car industry. For example, check out Hyundai & Toyota - well made cars with exellent warranties and affordable prices. When GM & Chrysler cars & trucks are $30K - $40K it is almost impossible for the average middle class family to buy new cars. Car manufacturers in general force families to buy SUVs & trucks because the car trunk openings are getting smaller and smaller in the interest of design that you can't get any larger items in & out easily. Also why do cars need to be so low that you feel like you have crawl in & out of them?

What does "going green" actually mean? I would wager most spouters of this term don't even know what it means, how it would be implemented, what the impacts are, etc. Aside from being another feel good buzz word, most seem to think we can get something from nothing or vice versa. Just know the batteries in your Prius contain some of the most poisonous manufactured substances known. Be realistic or be quiet.

Under the current administration it is code for "I'll pander to the loony left". The only green we will see is all the green ink used to print the money we are going to use to feed the lazy and rev up inflation.
