I am glad to see that USPS does have honest personnel.
This past Christmas I sent a $25 Wal-Mart gift card by USPS first class mail. It was a rather small amount, in an ordinary envelope, so I did not pay the extra fee to insure it. BIG MISTAKE.
The recipient said the envelope was opened and she got the enclosed card, but NOT the gift card! From the time I deposited it in the mail box to the time it was placed in the recipient's mail box, it was in USPS custody.
It really soured me that, in the Christmas season that someone would be so mindless as to steal what clearly was a Christmas present to someone. In this case, it was to a MISSIONARY. I can not believe that someone would do this and how they can rationalize in their own mind THEFT.
They have a job to do--USPS should have ZERO TOLERANCE for such theft, and instead of delivering shredded envelopes, they should investigate such situations and prosecute to the full extent of the law.

It is a common occurrence for people dropping mail into a collection box to drop whatever else they have in their hands: their bank deposits, keys, wallets, eyeglasses, etc. In addition, customers at the retail counter frequently leave such items behind, unknown to the Postal Clerk, because of the scale between the customer and Clerk; other customers frequently turn in such items, to be returned to the original owners. At new employee orientation, Postal employees are trained that the sanctity of the mail extends to extraneous items found in it, which must be turned in to be reunited with the true owners. I've worked for USPS for a long time and have never seen a Postal employee even hesitate about doing the right thing when valuables are found in the mail.
Sure they are helpful...

I bought textbooks for my kids to start school this week, I bought them online and were sent via media mail. They did not show up, so I requested the tracking number...The results of the tracking number? The package has been sent to "Dead Mail/Mail Recovery Center", I had never heard of such a thing, but have been told that the package probably got damaged in shipping (after sender sent it) and I may never see the package of $300 worth of books. Can I make a claim ? No, the clerk said on the phone, I did not have it insured. So the Post Office destroyed the package, and I am out the books my kids need. But I will not have confirmation of the books not being NON-DELIVERABLE for about 30 days. Great, made my day...

Amazing that the Postal Service would do a magnanimous gesture. Instead of 'stealing' the money, found the rightful owner. Myabe someone should pass this on to our illustrious president who derides the Postal Service. Come on 2010, can't wait vote, and then there's 2012.

I am fairly well-traveled and must say that every place I've lived in the USA, the postal service and it's employees have always done an outstanding job. Of course, when reporting the news, the "bad" will always be reported first. But the truth is, the majority of any agencies employees are honest, decent, true public servants who go above and beyond.
If you have ever lived outside of the USA, then you know how slow and undependable other countries postal services can be.
Besides, the women and men who wear our postal service uniform seem to be genuinely caring and friendly.
