From past experience in working in a campus, I feel any government job should require the applicant to be drug tested. This should be part of the hiring process.

I have a very capable, qualified, educated, responsible friend who is interested in working for the federal gov. The description she has shared regarding the amount of detail, complexity and complications of the various agencies "different" on line application process would scare me off! OPM should standardize the app process as much as possible with agency "sections" for specifics needed. Having to fill out different formats for different agencies is duplicative effort.

Amen to the complaints about how long it takes to hire. My Son applied for a TSO position back in May 2009 and the process is still on going. It appear their process is being done consectitively not concurrently. Some of the process could be done concurrently which would reduce the time to hire.

Has anyone looked at Title 5 of the US Code or the 3 volumes of 5 CFR lately? Forget about meaningful progress on the HR maze unless and until you make meaningful changes to the underlying problem: 535+ cooks in the kitchen. The process is the way it is because Congress voted it that way over a period of decades, and continues to make political changes every day. The hiring process reflects the political process that created it. When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.
Not surprising, is it?

I have to agree with most everything I read here - including the comment about how it is most often agency problems - agency HR problems. The DoA HR system is, well - not laughable - cryable is more accurate. And as long as there is a "stopper" list, the government will never improve...I support a ONE-TIME veteran preference hire, but once they get in the door, they should have to compete on ability, skills and experience - not have the "go to the top of the list" card everytime a vet wants to change jobs...If they can't excel in one job - try another (and take that position from someone more qualified)...WE NEED GOOD CHANGE (not the crap we've been getting!)

Hiring at my facility is an absolute joke! They put college degreed 'children' in positions that require experience and overlook those employees (usually over 50 yrs) who have that experience but no degree. Its really a shame.

Here, they are hiring these college kids into "intern" positions with guaranteed raises at midpoint as well as at the end of a two year "trial" period, and at the end these kids get to pick where in the office they want to work.
Anyone working here for many years who doesn't at least have a Bachelor's degree are shunted off to the side, not given any more priority assignments, etc, even though WE have been here 20 to 30 (or more) years and know the business inside and out. (These days, "institutional knowledge" is considered useless.) But when projects fail, they want to place the blame on us old folks not "sharing" our knowledge!
I think this is happening because the first crop of interns who were brought in at the inception of the intern program about 20 years ago, are all now in management.
I am retiring at the end of the year even though I'm just 55.
