FERS Sick Leave Annuity vs. Sell Back?
DOT/FAA

I was due to sell back my unused sick leave (700 hours) at 40 cents on the dollar when I retire on Oct 31st. That's a significant check there. What's the advantage to having 700 hours added to my annuity time at 50% vs. that?

I read an article in Fednews that deep in the bill there was a proposal to abloish A-76 studies. Is that right or was that a miss pringt or was there a line item veto?

This new benefit is anemic at best. Anyone with half a brain could run quick calculations on the back of an envelope to see that using even 1/3 of your sick leave before retiring would pay off far more than using the credit towards retirement. The problem that this new law is trying to address will not go away and most FERS employees will see right through this bandaid and continue abusing sick leave until a real solution is offered.

That may be true in your agency & work place. Speaking for myself, & those who have supported this change, it is constructive & welcome!

I agree with you. It is better than nothing and, although not equal to CSRS benefits due to the plans themselves, it does put FERS employees on equal footing with CSRS employees for this purpose.
T back in the saddle,
It is very easy to abuse sick leave and not get caught. Unless it is blatant, the employee can get a doctor's note and take off when wanted. Your remedy will not work.
Please do not accuse me of abusing sick leave. I have lots of it.

When can us current federal government workers start the process of redepositing? I've got 8-1/2 to buy back and that is going to cost me some money.

Question: I read the statement above regarding the FERS Redeposit Act provision of the DoD Authorization, but I'm not sure if it applies to me. You stated that this section of the DoD law is effective immediately, but is it effective immediately for former employees who will enter federal employment tomorrow (or some date in the future) or for former employees who already returned to federal employment before the enactment of the law?
