Worst Decade for Stocks in History But All TSP Funds Provide Positive Returns in 2009

If you're young...

This isn't entirely bad news if you're a young TSP investor and you've been investing every 2 weeks. All this means is you've been buying cheap shares of whatever fund(s) you've been in for the last 10 years. As someone with more than 15 years to go before retirement I like seeing periods like this. However, I do see lots of young employees jumping in and out of funds. Not a very smart move.

A decade is a period of ten years. You can start and stop it whenever you want as long as it ends up being 10 years.

Retired DoD has it right. The lead-in to the Full Story says "The first decade of the 21st Century was the worst for stock investments in nearly 200 years of recorded stock-market history."

They're talking about a specific decade, which began on 01/01/01 and goes through 12/31/10.

Your article title is very appropriate if you change the word Decade to YEAR.

Since the clamity of the 08' and 09' seems so fresh on our minds, we tend to forget 03' - 07' when TSP was reaping fantastic returns. I could not believe some of the gains. Yes, the early 2000 years were involved in a recessions, the middle years were super. Don't let current frustrations halo the entire decade.

I just found out that the official TSP web page now only shows TSP returns for the last five years. Returns for the C fund between 2000 and 2009 were negative. This is very important information and the TSP page has decided to eliminate it. Maybe the TSP folks ought to rethink all their rules and decisions.
