Diploma Mills and Bogus Degrees in the Federal Workforce

Diploma Mills and Bogus Degrees in the Federal Workforce

I was a GS-04 with a Master's degree (MA) and working on a second one (MBA) becuase my degree was not helping me promote. I have a child under two and went to a school that offered night class to do this. I feel like my hard work was for nothing when someone just pays for a diploma and then is a GS-15. That is just another piece of fuel to the fire for those who think Federal employees do not work for what they have.
Someone like myself who gave up a lot of personal time for over 5 years to better myself and hope for a promotion should not have to compete with someone who just pays for a piece of paper.
I think there should be further investigations into those who have degrees from Paper Mills and have their "degrees" stripped from their OPF.

Your degree WAS in vain. Check out all the people who had the government PAY for their degree. And you did it on your own, silly.

Even with a degree, you have to take the initiative to apply for higher grades. Why someone with a legitimate Masters Degree is willing to sit in a GS-4 position is beyond my comprehension. If you would check the OPM website, most jobs list a GS-9 or GS-11, up to a GS-12 for persons with a legitimate degree. Education is a substitute for experience up to certain grade levels.

This absolutely chaps my lips! I worked and paid for 6 years of graduate school at a major University to get my MS and PhD. to see others get ahead by cheating makes my blood boil! I would like to see those individuals removed for falsification of their application for a position.

This news is really upsetting for me because I work full-time and I attend college (full-time) at night from an accredited college. Please be assured that I am not getting any type of financial help from my agency because I work in the health field and the degree I am working towards is not in the health field. It is appalling to me that some people can get away with this and not have to pay for their education. Thank you.

Oh they pay for it - but that is about all that they do. How do they think that they can get a valid, legitimate, accredited degree by not attending any classes and doing a short paper. $3,600 for a PhD, if that in itself isn't a red flag I don't know what is.

A matter that should be of equal or more concern is the claim of a degree from an accredited institution. These normally occur in a field that places the employee is a premium pay category such as science or engineering. Also, when the employee conveniently leaves off part of the title of the degree such as the word technology as in "Electrical Engineering Technology."

I find it hard to believe that an agency would not have a listing of all employees with degrees, the field of study, the instution, and the date of graduation.

These are the same people who used to tell me I had to have a degree no matter what to get ahead. Well, the irony is that I moved ahead prior to getting my degree (which I now have) and they still don't have one.

To say that an Agency can not determine if their employees have a college degree or not is VERY unbelievable! At our Agency we MUST submit an Official Transcript from the college if we want it in our personnel file. For the life of me, how can an Agency award someone a GS-15, or any GS grade based on college work, and not have proof of that college work? Sounds like a scam to me.

I'd love to get a degree, online or else-where. BUT, "university classes have to come from an 'accredited' school: think that messes with your mind! Try having a GS-12 or 13 as a supervisor that only has a "degree" in vet. pharmacy from a school out of the country, is that fair!

One thing that you must remember, some of those diploma mills, have legitimate sounding names that seem similar to accredited universities or colleges. They select sound alike names and give out very impressive looking documents. My degree is from an accredited institution and I too resent those that pay for pieces of paper with no classroom attendance. I worked full-time during the day and attended the university in the evenings and on weekends. I stayed up until 2:00 am sometimes to complete papers or projects. Maybe it is not what you know, but who you know?
