It is kind of sad that a person that does not abuse the sick leave policy will not be able to get any compensation with the FERS plan. In this day and age with the health care system that is available to Government employees, the majority of us do take care of ourselves, so therefore the need to save this is useless. As for myself, I feel guilty if I do abuse this sick leave, although I see many of my co-workers do this.

I have to say again that I do not think it is right that FERS employees are actually penalized for comming to work everyday and not using their sick leave. Some of us are dedicated employees who come to work even when not feeling well and manage to accumulate a great deal of sick leave. I can understand why we would not get it added to our retirement but why not pay us for it the way everyone is paid for their vacation leave. It is leave that we earned!!!!!!

What is the incentive for a FERS employee to not use his/her sick leave? I have accumulated over 800 hours in sick leave. In the future, I'll be calling in sick more often now that I have that 800-hour buffer.

It is unfortunate we have so many employees willing to accept advantages of benefits of being a government employee but willing to rationalize behavior to obtain benefits not authorized. FERS employees have a number of advantages including portability and larger contributions from their employer. There are always people who can come up with excuses to take what is not theirs (i.e. using sick leave when not sick because "I am entititled to it" or "it isn't a fair system.") These are the same excuses used by everyone to justify anything they want to do. In an ideal world, these people who are willing to steal from the government would not work for Uncle Sam.

It may not seem right to use sick leave other than what it was intended for and I personally don't abuse my sick leave in that manner. I'm FERS and according to friends under CSRS, they are guaranteed retirement income unlike for FERS whose retirement plans can change dramatically because of the market, so enough about TSP. Further, any sick leave that I "earned" as a result of coming to work, even when I haven't felt well, I do not consider stealing and I feel I am entitled to it. And no, I don't think the system is fair.

Everyone should look hard and long at your sick leave, and that is just what is is designed to be used for.... an "800" hour buffer is only 100 days... a little over three months..... that is nothing to cover a major illiness.... believe me " I have been there" I had to use all my sick leave, annual leave, and went into the hole for both... thank God for the donations through the "Donated Leave Program" that added another 500 or so hours that I had to use.. Count Your Blessings" if you have unused sick leave on the books.... for one it generally means you have your health... and let's all quit fussing about the differences in the CSRS and FERS.... both systems have their plus and minuses.... and each and every person had the choice of switching to FERS when it was introduced....

Think of it as insurance. And hope you never have to use it. But if you do you will appreciate the hours you have saved. There will always be abusers. They are the ones who when they get real sick want the rest of us to donate leave to them. Maybe you complainers should work for some small company where if you don't show up you don't get paid.

Unless you haven't figured it out yet as a CSRS employee, there is a twist on a third option. When I first started in Govt. service, I witnessed something odd. The shop I was in collectively got chewed out for abusing sick leave. Then the manager that did the chewing went out on a year of sick leave before he retired. Strange? Not really! If a person is eligible to retire, and has a medical condition, (or a Dr. that will work with him) you make out better if you use your leave. If a person has 2087 hrs of S/L on the books, and takes the time off, he gets his full pay for the year instead of an annuity, and he accrues 104 hrs. more of sick leave to use. This is one of the few win-win options an employee has if he can use it!

Why should FERS employees have the same benefit as CSRS employees in regard to accumulated sick leave at retirement? CSRS employees don't get matching TSP contributions, as do FERS employees. If I had the choice, I'd choose the matching TSP contributions over the credit for accumulated sick leave.

When I was at FPMI, we did a survey on sick leave usage. One finding that confirmed our beliefs was that CSRS believe would continue to conserve their sick leave in their last year before retiring, while FERS people felt they would probably starting using it up during their last year before retirement. I am not surprised. In my case, one year of unused sick leave meant an extra 2 percent in my monthly pension check from OPM.

I am sorry, but what about the matching 5% the government pays for FERS employees that invest in the TSP? That benefit is not an option for the CSRS employees. And the sad thing is there are so many FERS employees who do not even take advantage of that benefit. If FERS employees would take advantage of the matching TSP for their whole career, it would offset a lot of CSRS sick leave.

What a crock!!! You get screwed because you don't get sick, nor do you abuse the system and take leave when you're not ill. What do you get for being honest and having integrity? A kick in the you know what!!!!!!!

I am on FERS and a lot of health problems. Feel angry when people take off when they are not sick. Currently I have to work on days that I am sick to "save up for a operation" that my doctor reccomends. Don't say sick leave loan to me. I had to do that before and it was so depressing to take annual leave when the loan was not enough.
