Congress should leave such decisions to the TSP Board and the policies established for such decisions. That is why an independent body was established - to prevent politics/conflicts of interest from influencing investment decisions.

Politics aside... a REIT is a narrow sector and as such can be much more volatile. If used as a small portion of one's portfolio may be a good thing but if someone uses it as a primary (or the only) fund they will be putting their retirement savings at much greater risk as opposed to leaving it in broad asset class funds such as we have now.

When it is discovered that one or more of these REITs groups have mishandled or stolen funds from the TSP account what happens then? Who is going to be responsible for covering these losses? Surely TSP investors cannot expect the Federal Tax Payer to pick up the bill on such a loss and once the money is spent on luxury cars, homes, condos, private parties, vacations, and bonuses for REIT executives there is no way the total loss can be recovered from the sale of their assets. So where does that leave the TSP investors when something like the Enron scandal happens with this new investment plan?

The TSP board should decide this issue and politics in any way, shape, or form should not be involved. The TSP board was set up to make its on way and not be involved with politics or congress!!! The members of congress that are involved in this along with the "PAC'S" should be a shamed of themselves for allowing this to occur againt the advice of the TSP board members that represent all who contribute into these funds.

I agree, Politics should not be involved. I think the TSP board had done well so far. I, for one would not be interested in REIT's.

This article highlights the political environment in which all federal employees work but which most of us do not think about.
The underlying problem is that there are no term limits for Congressmen. They can accept large contributions which, in private industry for for the rest of civil service, would result in a prison sentence. But most Members, such as Congressman Porter, want to convince us they are only guided by more virtuous purposes--such as telling federal employees why the dollars he accepted were not influential in playing around with our retirement money.
It is a sick system; we need a constitutional amendment to allow term limits to get rid of some of these career politicians.
