While I was working, it was normal to have at least 15 emails in my inbox every morning - many of them because I was on someone's distribution list. If I was out of the office for a week, I'd have at least 100 messages to sort through when I got back. If I was gone for three weeks... you get the picture.
Towards the end of my career, I traveled with a laptop and that helped. Still, the was as much official "junk" mail as there was email that I needed to read.
The important stuff - correspondence that I needed to insure got someone's attention - was mailed and I kept a copy.
One of the helpful realities I did learn for both email and written correspondence is that who gets copied is almost as important as who it gets sent to.

this is so true now once you are on an e-mail list just like in regular mail, they need something called the delete my e-mail address as in the direct marketing to be removed.
