OPM was able to make some modest progress in reducing the retirement claims backlog in May.
According to the latest figures (see below), the total outstanding backlog of claims fell from 16,618 at the end of April to 14,551 at the end of May. OPM processed 10,498 claims and received 8,431 new claims during the month. The number of new claims was significantly higher than what OPM was expecting to receive in May (6,800).
