Update: President Trump signed the bill on January 16
Following on the heels of the Senate passing the bill last night, the House has now passed legislation that would guarantee back pay to federal employees after the shutdown is over.
The Government Employee Fair Treatment Act (S. 24) passed easily by a vote of 411-7. It is the same bill that passed the Senate last night and was introduced by Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD).
Cardin tweeted:
On this first day that so many federal workers – hundreds of thousands still on the job – are missing their paycheck, the House has passed my bill to guarantee back pay once the #TrumpShutdown is over. I hope @POTUS will keep his word and sign this into law. #EndTheShutdown pic.twitter.com/WUY7vTb7bD
